This thread got my curiosity going, so I just went thru my books as well... nearly 1/3 of my voice business in 2013 has been of the type Scott described: repeat clients from P2P gigs over the years that have just sent me stuff to voice. Granted, some of that is ongoing work (ie: the 3rd season of a hunting show that originally cast me from a P2P in 2009), but a good amount of it was out-of-the-blue unexpected work, and all of it is at very fair rates.
Thanks for posting that, Scott... that was an enlightening exercise! _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

I just got done with a VO session (yes, the result of a P2P audition) in which the job posting said, "The client has commented that they enjoy/like Patrick Stewart. So please provide your best rendition." I submitted a pretty damn good approximation of Captain Picard, if I do say so myself. And I was hired on that basis, By the time we got finished, the takes they liked were nothing like my audition (and more like the "normal" me). And the second spot they had me do was never intended to be like Patrick Stewart; it was more like the old "Real Men of Genius" spots.
And I've told this story before, but it is along the same lines as Scott's. I auditioned (also on a P2P) for a spot for Whole Foods, the specs for which called for a "Senior Male." I was a finalist and was contacted by the client and asked to do a second read. I didn't get that job. It went to the 10 year old daughter of Kristin Lennox. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Thank you for your time, |
Since last responding, Scott, I've noticed something on V123, at least for me.
In the past week I won 2 more jobs there, and in each case, the client was only looking for 25 auditions.
Besides looking at the budget and whether I think I'm 'right' for the job, and ALSO looking at the track record of the client in terms of % of auditions opened, I'm beginning to be drawn more towards those leads that are accepting fewer auditions, as well, for obvious reasons.
And, just to elaborate on the whole opening thesis of this thread, in the LAST WEEK ALONE, between the 2 new jobs and more repeat business from clients originally finding me via V123, it's meant $1350 dollars worth of business. So - again - for some folks, the P2Ps CAN, indeed work well. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

That is super great! Thanks for all your advice and expertise. I will put it into practice and hope to have as much success (someday) as you've had. _________________ “Real freedom is freedom from the opinions of others. Above all, freedom from your opinions about yourself. ”

I was REALLY impressed until I realised the units of measurement were ..
(A) An ENTIRE week
( US dollars
Hiding behind my tears is a level of disappointment only surpassed by the time when I realised my cat ( Deacon Blue, named after an 80s Glasgow band) could NOT sing in Spanish but was merely miming to a Julio Inglesias CD. |

Philip, I'm not quite sure whether your comment is meant in jest, or is truly expressing disappointment.
Please realize that $1350 (which is now $2100... see below) does not represent the sum total of my work for the week. it is nothing more than income gleaned from winning a couple of auditions PLUS residual work coming to my inbox from now-regular clients who originally found me on V123. For the week, that is about 1/2 of my workload, which includes 2 audiobooks in progress and safety training video narrations.
As an aside, one of the 2 jobs won last week turned from a $300 job to a $1050 job yesterday when the NEW V123 client (Hopefully to become yet another of many repeat clients), asked me to voice 3 other local radio spots in the :15 - :30 range.
The whole reason I bring all this up is simply to present an alternative view to those who think P2P sites are a waste of time and would rather cold-call or market elsewhere, which I've had very little luck doing. Along with that, though, is the acknowledgement that I think we ALL have that one's marketing efforts must include a wide array of tactics, from P2P sites, to cold calls, to social media, to personal contacts, to using agents, etc. _________________ Scott R. I suppose the gigs where the limit is 10, 15 or 25 auditions are the way to go, provided you are camped out at your computer around the clock... I find that I am able to submit to those from sheer luck, that the audition is posted while I am online.. otherwise, those fill up really quickly...
also, any gig above $400-500, auditions fill up at an insanely quick pace..
two points:
building up a client base through V123 is the ONLY reason to be a member.. the return on new auditions, new clients vs gigs isn't that great..
allow me to reiterate the complete uselessness of the rating system... everything I have booked in the last few weeks have been unrated auditions, and all the Finalists, Considering and Maybe's? Nada... I actually booked from a client who gave me a Not Likely.. he passed on me on what I auditioned for but gave me a gig for something else months passed... _________________ Lee Kanne
