Question for Source Connect users: which version (pro or standard) do you use, and why? Thinking it's time to add it to my studio, not sure which version to go with.
Thanks! _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

I use Standard, the upgraded latest version. It has been flawless in performance for me, but I also use an ethernet connection instead of wireless. |

I just use Standard which has been more than enough for me so far. I know the suggestion is to use it on a wired connection, but honestly, wireless has been working just fine for me (knocking on wood at this very moment!). _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

Thanks gang! I sensed that Source-Elements was trying to steer v-o people towards their pricier product (not that I blame them) and I had a feeling that the Standard would suit my needs just fine. Thanks for the input!!! _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

the Pro is supposed to be better for remote/mobile situations, if I remember correctly. Something about it being better able to get around firewalls in hotel wi-fi configurations I think. If you travel a lot and need connectivity
in hotels you might want to do more research on the Pro version.
Of course George Whittam could best cover the specifics |

I am a user of Source-Connect Pro. There is no difference between the two versions in audio quality. Pro has the ability to compare the two files at the end of a session (your local audio file and the remote audio file at the other studio) and to upload corrected packets if it finds discrepancies. Pro also is considerably more customizable in connection settings - hence it is better for traveling voice actors who need to circumvent hotel firewalls or have dubious wifi connections. _________________ Graeme Spicer

I use standard. It caused one engineer a little consternation - he wanted me to work at a higher bitrate than I could manage, and couldn't figure out why I couldn't choose my bitrate.
It turned out there's a slight difference to the interface, so he was describing something not available/visible on the Standard's GUI. In the end, we went at 96 kbps and he had no sound quality complaints. _________________ Kendra Hoffman

Pro can:
Set any bit rate (Standard has 3 settings, top is 96kbps)
Set the buffer as low as your system can handle (low delay)
Set the ports
Auto login
Auto answer
Set the audio devices independently from the System Preferences
And other stuff...
Definitely recommend Pro for road warriors that can't miss a session, but for home users Standard is usually adequate. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I thought I heard somewhere that the medium setting on standard was equal to ISDN quality and high was better than ISDN. But now I'm seeing 96k is the top? So SC Standard at it's best is worse than ISDN? _________________ Joe Szymanski

IMHO, 64kbps AAC (Medium) is equivalent in quality to L2 Mono 128.
96kbps exceeds ISDN's L2 Mono 128.
ISDN codecs like the Zephyr Xstream handle 128 kbps AAC Mono, but almost no one in the VO industry bothers with it. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I'm still a little confused George, which is a reflection on me, not you. I think what you are saying is that AAC is a higher quality codec than mp3 and whatever L2 Mono 128 ISDN uses so you can get a better signal with less bandwidth. So, Source Connect/ISDN/mp3 is not apples to apples when it comes to a specified amount of Kbps, correct? _________________ Joe Szymanski
