I get it. I really do. It is what it is... and that's not a commodity item ripe for discount.
But, are we just talking about a question of degree here? If you have a realistic corporate narration rate of $100 per page, and the customer says he's got 1,000 pages for you and is looking for a break... are you going to hold the line at $100,000? Really?
I know that's an extreme example... but we seem to be getting into a discussion of principles here... I'm interested in how strong they are. If we accept that there is valid case for movement here, then bulk discount is established and the break point becomes an individual's business decision.
To be honest, at some time most of my principles have been burned to a crisp on the raging fire of pragmatism.
Edit: I just wanted to add that I'm not trying to be contentious here, but I honestly feel that discounts "for bulk" are both a reality and an expectation within the marketplace. It is of course an individual's personal choice as to how they run their own business. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

We can take the high road all we want, but I would guess there is not a single talent here who hasn't taken a lesser fee than normal in order to land a gig. If you have ALWAYS gotten your rate without exception, I tip my hat to you.

That made me look at May this year. Out of 62 jobs I got THE RATE or more 61 times BUT the one job for which I didn't even get my minimum session fee was ....FANFARE.... The agreed Union (UK) minimum for a radio commercial for the broadcasting station, about $43 ... As a Louche VO I shall spend it on riotous living. |

A guy I've done some business with over the years asked me for a rate quote to voice an animated character he was pitching a prospective client for a TV campaign. I gave him a number he seemed OK with. And last week, he let me know that the project was a go. He also asked me if I could give him a bit of a break on the price. Then the scripts arrived in my email. Not the one or two I was expecting, but six. I had no problem knocking a few bucks off the total. This time, however, I followed Bish's example and listed the spots on the invoice at the full fee then added a second line labeled "Preferred Client Discount" with a number in red indicating the amount of the reduction.
In whatever dealings I have with clients I always think about when the shoe is on the other foot and I'm the client or customer. I ask myself how I wish to be treated. Pretty much at the top of the list is service. Therefore, I believe that giving great service to my clients is paramount. And while I rarely make buying decisions based solely upon price, it can be a factor. I'm more inclined to do business with someone who appears to be making the effort to work with me -- even if the adjustment is small or some benefit other than a lower price-- than someone who says, "This is the price; take it leave it." So I'm willing to be flexible (within reason) if it makes a client feel better about doing business with me. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Jeff, I agree with you completely.
And differ strongly.
It ain't about taking the high road, or being utterly inflexible in your negotiations. It's about setting the table properly so that when negotiating time comes, you've given yourself some leverage...and avoided the dreaded "commodity" approach. You could always just eliminate certain vowels, like no "U's", or maybe every fourth word could be a contraction... or both! Not sure how that would work out. But following that criteria, the previous sentence would read, 'Not sre how that'd work ot.'
I guess it doesn't sound terrible, and for a discounted rate, what would they expect? _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics
