I have Source-Connect and even though I've only used it a handful of times, it's paid for itself a few times over (and I've gotten work I would have not gotten otherwise if I didn't have it). Let me know if you ever need to test it out. _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

Source Connect has been good for me. I picked it up when I had a client ask if I had it, and offered a job that paid for it 6 times over. I said I did (I had used the trial to get everything set u , and purchased it promptly. The session went off flawlessly, and I haven't used it since. |

well, right now I am using up my demo period... but since I could pay it off in several installments... I may as well buy it (so I thought)
I don't know if you had to use a dongle when you signed up for your demo... nowdays you have to buy a dongle that is about $50... just to sign up for a demo version.
Will see, I think it draws customers in when they see "Souce connect or ISDN equipped" _________________ Best,

I would be interested in whether, in the beginning, you got Source-Connect because you needed it for a project.. Or, if you got Source-Commect first...and then got gigs you wouldn't have otherwise.
This is sort of a "chicken or the egg" question.

Honestly, I don't think seeing that you have SC really draws any clients. ISDN, yes, but SC isn't accepted enough to really be a draw to clients.
Also, you can only do the "rental" program to purchase the Pro version, which isn't necessary for most. The rental price is almost half the cost of the standard version. Personally, I'd say your better off just buying the software if you get a client who wants it for a job. If you set everything up and test with the trial, then you are ready to roll whenever a client that comes along they wants it. Then just purchase the license and you are ready for the session.
That's what I did at least. I advertised having SC before I owned it, because I had the capability if a client wanted it. It's not like ISDN that takes a long time to install. You just register and you are ready to roll. (Providing you did all the network setup prior to advertising) |

I would not want a Pro version... at least to pay for it
I have a demo version of Standard SC. I think it is quite enough. PRO is for studios mostly.
It is configured and working... at least with the echotest service it does.
While they allow me to break payments down into several installments, I think I should buy it I am not paying 650 at once.

I've had SC Standard for about a month, it's already paid for itself multiple times over with 2 SC sessions and 1 ISDN session via a bridge service. I'm kicking myself for not getting it sooner. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

I have a few clients that are now asking if I have it and would I use it and should they get it, too. One such client works with a few of the talent on this board. As it becomes better known I think having it could draw in more clients. But I wouldn't put all of my eggs in that basket (um, couldn't resist with another chicken reference). _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Clutter - I bought it before I had clients ask for it. ISDN is not available in my area at all, so the draw to SC for me was that I could be ISDN capable via a bridging service (and I have done more of those than just SC to SC). _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

Every so often I ask the production houses I work on ISDN with if they see any other technology coming into bigger use and I finally got my first positive answer. One of them says they're now regularly using Source Connect as well as ISDN.

I guess it is becoming a draw then. I haven't had any clients ask for it, and the studios that I've worked with haven't had it. I just did a phone patch session last week with a studio in LA, and they asked if I had ever considered ISDN. I said that I had, but it want really in my plan (as it is slowly phasing out and I don't have any clients who need it). I said that I got SC because it was requested, and they pretty much just shrugged it off. Hopefully it does catch on. Even though it isn't a straight reliable as ISDN, it certainly has the functionality down. I'd love to use it more often. |

I can see where established, big-time studios who have ISDN are not excited about acquiring additional technology when they already have "the gold standard".
But do those folks understand that as the concept of small installs of voice-over people, whether in home, or in a rented commercial space, may be in geography where ISDN is no longer an option for new install?
I assume most of these conversations take place under circumstances where the v-o person does not want to rock-the-boat with conversation... but just get the gig, and the studio handing out the business does not have an interest in extended small talk.... BUT: There has to have been some occasions where serious conversation has taken place? Do they understand or NOT understand that ISDN is apparently going by the wayside. We just don't know if that means in 18 months.... or in 18 years. |

I doubt big studios are excited about the growth of the home studio. While most home studios aren't equipped to record music, a decent home studio makes a big recording studio unnecessary for VO...at least in most cases. |

ISDN is perhaps more reliable BUT extremely expensive service and equipment wise, also, problematic to install and not everywhere available.
SC - is easy to install, much cheaper and more flexible (you can take it wherever you go). The best part, once you buy it, you do not have to pay anymore for anything.
All it needs is fast and reliable internet connection!
I love the idea! I wish all studios would get this program... it would broaden their horizons.... and ours for that matter _________________ Best,
