When I was making the panels and chunks for my main room, I searched high and low for OC703 (close enough to collect)... I was about to give up when I just came across a local building materials supplier... not part of any chain. I just stopped in to chat with them about alternatives... only to find out that they had it in stock! Not everyone has an on-line presence, and doing it "the old-fashioned way" can sometimes work. Unfortunately, this time they didn't (and couldn't tell me when) so I went with Roxul for the extra stuff I need for the room move. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

The formaldehyde content in the OC703 stuff turns me off...
Roxul has lower toxicity, and the cotton stuff has zero toxicity.
Roxul 60 is very similar to OC705. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

+1 - put up a bunch of OC703 in a small room then spend a large percentage of your time in that room and you will grow a third arm out of the back of your head. yes, it's great for waiving at people behind you - but it makes it hard to wear a hat.
look it up ... it's science. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

That is actually why I ditched the Rock wool brand stuff. I was having health issues. I pulled it all out and put the denim in. Problem solved. |

George, thank you for creating this thread! Thank you all for the input. I didn't even see this thread until now. I am still doing research on what to buy. I am not really wanting to build anything myself (frames and such) and I also don't want anything that is remotely toxic.
PROBLEMS:
-Lowes is being no help. They are saying they don't carry the Roxul Safe n Sound. It cannot be shipped here via their website.
-Companies will ship to MANY places except Hawaii/Alaska.
-Even if a company does ship to HI, the shipping costs are sometimes equal or more of the actual product price.
-The biggest local music gear stores only carry a portable vocal booth.
I just really can't figure this out. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. At this point, I am considering carving out even more of a budget for this part of my studio.
I won't be on this island forever, thank God. _________________ Rena

Ya, the annoying part is that you can't get the stuff you need in bulk without it being huge. Even the denim stuff is still a large bundle. A larger budget may be necessary...or find something that you can "get by" with until you move. You probably won't want to move the stuff either if you buy it there.
Moving blankets and such? I dunno. When ya moving? |

My husband is military. We are stationed here until early January 2016.
I just called the local super hardware store (City Mill). They suggested an insulation product called Canec and felt quite confident it should do the trick. Heh. Upon further research, I discovered it has a notable amount of arsenic. Hmm...
Moving blankets could work. I think I would probably need to double them up. There are all different brands/grades of them, so I have been seduced by several different sites. Shipping is also an issue with them, unless I can find some heavy-duty blankets locally.
Does anyone in Cali want to switch locations with me? I'm done here. _________________ Rena

How bout those wool blankets from military surplus stores? Those things are everywhere. Put 4-5 of those on top of each other and then leave an air gap of a couple inches...that might get ya pretty close. |

I haven't looked into that, but I'm not sure I have enough room to pile on 4 or 5 with an air gap. Even if I created frames,
I just got off the phone with another local Lowes. They will no longer stock the Roxul Safe n Sound, but they are going to contact the company on Monday to see if they can make a special order for me. We'll see on Monday. _________________ Rena

Rena, contact the recording studios in Hawaii and find out what they did. They got their sound deadening material from somewhere and I'm sure not all of it from the mainland. If that doesn't work Google voiceover talents on the islands and ask what they did.

Less than a year ago when I bought mine, it was on their national website. You ordered it and UPS or FedEx delivered it... to you.... or to the store.
That may have changed by now. |

Thanks, everyone! They will not deliver to the island. Home Depot said they don't have it. I am seek an alternate route now! I am grateful for all of the support! _________________ Rena

This may be too late to help, but I ran across an item from ATS on Amazon for 2" Roxul. I'd suggest seeing if Amazon had an issue with delivery and if not becoming a "Prime" member to avoid the shipping. |
