I'm putting on my Andy Rooney hat now.
I just saw this audition copy. The details have been changed to protect the innocent car dealership. The idiom idiot copy writer's mis-use has been left intact to show his/her ignorance.
For the few who don't know, the phrase is "he can't see the forest for the trees" and here's the proper definition: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/can%27t+see+the+forest+for+the+trees
Quote: | Have you heard the adage, see the forest through the trees?
At Smith Honda, we are all about the big picture.
You.
You work. Hard.
You Deserve a great experience.
We want to work as hard as you do…to earn your business. Next time you drive down Main by Wilson, take a look through the trees.
Look for the dealership that has been locally owned and family operated since 1960.
Right now get a 2014 Civic for 169 per month and 0% financing with approved credit. (please read a bit faster)
Smith Honda, See the forest through the trees. It’s Easy. |
Holy carp.

I think that guy used to write copy for my old cluster.
Which is why we referred to it as a cluster.... something.... I forget.
I've worked so hard to forget. _________________ Don Brookshire

Oh my. So this isn't an actual gig of yours, Bruce? I was sitting here thinking, gosh, they built the entire ad around this gaffe - you can't easily just correct the saying.
If you're the talent booked for this do you just hold your nose and read it? There seem so many risks to pointing out the misuse. _________________ jen@jengosnell.com

I would definitely point it out. Politely and very tactfully of course. Since I wouldn't be reading it the way it was written I'd have nothing to lose - and possibly everything to gain by saving them a ton of money and embarrassment by producing and letting it go to air.
If they get offended, so be it. It's just one job - and one I wouldn't want my name attached to anyway. |

I like eX's reply. This is an example of the details being the devil. Or the early worm flips you the bird. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Whenever I'm in a similar situation, I always "play dumb" (alright, who's the wise guy who said "Who's playing?") and tell them they're probably right and I may be wrong, but "I've always heard it this way," and proceed to offer them an alternative that corrects their mistake. It generally introduces enough element of doubt in their minds that they at least consider that their version may be erroneous. They rarely, if ever, refuse the offer, so they have at least one correct read in the can. They can then debate the issue amongst themselves and, with any luck, arrive at the right decision. The good news is, you get to be the hero for saving their asses; the bad news is, you don't get that second session fee for coming back to record the correction at a later date. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Ad-age of writer = doesn't need to shave yet.
Your right he's probably a cluster @$!# copywriter. They get what they pay for these days. At least the major cluster here dumped the good talent and wonders where the advertising dollars and ratings went. Don't get me started on bean counters running industries they do not begin to understand.
What happened to those times when 20 something creatives learned their craft and understood it before earning the right to take over. When I was 25 I moved into programming and operations. We kicked a$$ (credit to a good staff and my tuning and direction) The competition sent out air checks they recorded off the air of me in afternoon drive and resumes they created to get me out of town and out if their hair. I learned that when cross town took me to lunch and asked where I wanted to work except his town. He actualy said you are kicking my a$$.
Now they only see the world as it relates to them and their friends.
It seemed so different back then. We listened to radio. We actually read books. We actuayll engaged in face to face conversation in more than 140 characters.

Todd, you are cracking me up!! As usual.
Lee, nice passive approach to pointing out the problem. I'll have to remember that one! _________________ jen@jengosnell.com

[showing my age] Laugh-In's Joanne Worley would ask, "Is that a chicken joke?"
But, seriously, folks. I would handle it the way Lee would. I provide 'CYA' alternate reads all the time.
Gregory: I don't think it's your phone responsible for the double-posting. It happened to me once or twice using my desktop computer. And, when I attempted to delete the duplicate post, the original was deleted, as well. It must be an occasional bug somewhere. _________________ Mike
