I'm sure a few of you have tried this (or maybe even use it currently), but I have been using a new tool for session monitoring (whether in person or via technology) and I love it!

Personally, I hate headphones. I don't having them on my head, I don't like how I hear myself, and I don't like how I sometimes adjust my delivery, tone, etc...in headphones. When I'm doing audiobooks I just use my speakers, but live sessions require you to be in headphones.

So I took a jump and picked up a set of custom in-ear monitors. These things ROCK. I use only one ear in when I'm doing sessions, but the audio quality of the in-ears is much better than my Sony 7506s, it's much more comfortable, and it is more open.

Now, normally they cost a butt-load (official price), but there is a newer company that makes killer in-ears at a fraction of the cost. 1964 is the company, and they were awesome to work with. The in-ears I got have an ambient sound port which allows some ambient sound into the headphones. Kind of like an open back can.

I've really been enjoying these things, so I thought I'd pass along the info. I've had them for a couple months now. I really love having my own headphones in a studio anyway...I'm kinda paranoid about using headphones that tons of other people have used.

No bone conduction issues?

You weren't kidding about their cost. But...this price is a "fraction" of what other companies charge?

I just swallowed my GUM.

I didn't say they were $50. Check out the prices of Westone or Ultimate Ears. Much more expensive for customs.

To me, well worth the investment not to have to wear cans.

Those, by the way, are 6-driver customs...way overkill for voice over. The dual driver model is plenty for our purposes. Let's compare apples to apples here. The dual drivers are half the price of the 6-driver. UE's most expensive model is over $2000, and they only have 5 drivers. (not that the number of drivers is directly responsible for better sound).

Just sharing my experience with the gear. I use these things all the time and love them.

To be clear. I wasn't being critical. Just a little envious when I goggled the price of these guys. Half the price? Well, I suppose at 350-400 then it becomes a lot more affordable for many.

But, I'm curious about the procedure to get these to custom fit your ears? Do they send you a kit and you somehow mold your own ears? Do you have to go to them? It would be interesting to know more about what's involved.

You just go to a local audiologist (cost me $25) and they shove a piece of cotton on a string all the way into your ear, then they fill your ears with this two-part foamy epoxy stuff, and you sit there for like 5-10 minutes while it solidifies. Then they pull the string and the "impression" out of your ear. You send that over to the company making the customs and they create a mold from your impression to build your customs. The finished product is extremely comfortable...after you get used to something being in your ear.

Darn. Wouldn't work for me since I wear hearing aids. Already have something in both ears.
