Is there any reason to keep already published audiobooks?

Pam,

A few years ago I recorded an audiobook directly for the author, delivered the files to him and all was well. Last year, he wrote to ask if I might still have those audiobook files because he had a crash and didn't have a back-up of the audiobook.

Now, that's a unique situation. Things we've delivered to a publisher are unlikely to ever be requested again. But, you never know. I keep all of my old files on a NAS drive on my network and on data DVD or Bluray disks.

I actually had a similar thing happen. A producer had a cloud crash and was missing one of the files. Because I had it all archived, I just uploaded it for him and everybody was happy.

I have a strict policy against keeping old audiobook files.

Then again, I also have a strict policy against narrating audiobooks.

Say I'm old fashion but I don't want my data on "the cloud" nor live my life on social media. Got a 3 TB Western Digital External HD after the holidays at Walmart for $89.

Get over your fear of the cloud, because that spiffy new HD won't survive ten minutes if there's a fire.

cloud servers can crash too. i don't trust anybody - not even myself.

1. massive video files are stored on duplicate hard drives at two locations
2. audio files are saved to external hard drives
3. important files, including family photos are backed up on yet another 3tb drive stored in my safe deposit box ($45/year)

Overheard at the airport:

Person 1) "I just got through backing up my computer hard drives from the office onto storage drives and stored them offsite."

Person 2) "Where are you storing them?"

Person 1) My ex-wife's garage.

After one year, they get kicked to the curb. External a great idea, cloud a better idea in case of fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, zombie apocalypse, alien invasion or Putin removing his shirt.
