I've finally gotten around to organizing some in-progress pics of the new VO booth I'm constructing. It is a free-standing booth, constructed on a platform, so here is that platform being built.

The frame is simple 2x4 construction.

Atop the frame, I'm rolling out mass-loaded vinyl. This stuff is normally used in the walls, but I have it so I might as well use it.

Here's the platform fully covered in mass-loaded vinyl and trimmed. This stuff is applied loosely, not stretched taut.

The underside of the platform with mass-loaded vinyl.

On top of the platform goes the floor decking. I chose to use two layers of half inch MDF with Green Glue between the layers. Again, Green Glue is normally used in walls but I figured it would perform the same function in the floor.

And here's the underside of the floor with Roxul Safe 'n Sound insulation installed and held in with upholstery webbing from the fabric store to keep it from flopping out. The black things are Auralex U-Boat Floor Floaters, which are little resilient rubbery things that keep the platform from making direct contact with the floor beneath, and provide further sound isolation.

Since the booth is not yet finished, I have no idea how well all this will do at keeping unwanted noise out, but I suspect it will be OK.

Lee, just out of curiosity - what are the dimensions? what size booth are you building?

This looks great. Makes me want to grab some power tools and start building - (but we already have a booth..so...)

The base is just shy of 5' on a side (58" x 58") and the walls are going to be about 9" thick, leaving me with an interior space of just under 3½' x 3½'.

Sadly, it's not going to be "bigger on the inside."

I like the "upholstery webbing from the fabric store" idea to secure the Roxul. Clever.

YAY! but square? that's going to have a standing wave issue, but treatment will hopefully hinder!

The only way to have made it not square would have been to make it smaller, and at around 3'4" x 3'4" interior space, it'll be plenty small enough. Once I get it insulated and drywalled, I'll start with furniture blankets and bass traps, then maybe Studio Suit and/or a Kaotica Eyeball. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
