When I was a Windows user I'd "format c:" almost yearly to clean out the sludge, feels like buying a new computer every year without the price penalty.

So, backup, reinstall OS (Mavericks in my case) and THEN reinstall from backup?
Or did you mean, reinstall OS completely and start from there?
