I tried ipDTL today with another studio and it worked as advertised. I was even on a slower speed wireless connection and still hit the HQ numbers. Latency was a non factor. With the ease of use, performance and reasonable subscription rate, I can't think of any negatives.

Also received the email from Source Elements today regarding the beta test of Source Connect Now. It uses the Chrome browser just like ipDTL. I filled in the information and was ready to give it a try until the little box came up saying that I needed a valid support contract to be able to try it.

I've been a Source Connect user for several years and I haven't had the need for a support contract since the first year. Perhaps this is just a pre beta version being made available to supported users but here's hoping that Source Elements will make the beta of NOW available for a trial period.

**** UPDATE ****

I just heard from Rebekah at SC and it appears the beta for SC NOW will have a public release in 3 to 4 weeks. Sooner if you do have a support contract. There are some features of this new release that look really interesting and useful. Thank you Rebekah for the quick response on this.
(Check out (George)" Whittam's World ". They discuss and demo the new version.)

In case you have trouble finding the demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A4j6ARGWYg

Dan and I will use SC Now for our audio feed on Monday's EWABS.com, so you'll see it in action, LIVE, warts n all. Last week we did the same with IPDTL and it worked great (save for a loop-back issue caused by Dan which he eventually fixed halfway thru the show).

I had the same exchange with Rebekah this week. I no longer have a support contract either as SC has been rock solid for me here all along.

She said they'd be in touch soon though.

Looking forward to checking it out. I'll have to watch EWABS this week to see how it works.

Does anyone have a feel as to the studios acceptance of ipDTL and Source Connect/Source Now? I know when logging into my Source Connect account I can see an impressive list of users, but they're mostly voice talent. This topic has been discussed extensively, but the fact remains that no matter how many voice people sign up for ipDTL, Source, ATX, etc...it's going to be up to the studios to cut the cord.

A few years ago I made a point during every ISDN session to talk up Source Connect. I stopped because I got the feeling I was annoying my clients.

Nothing ...Tumbleweed ...No comments at all. ISDN sessions as busy as ever.

Seriously, in my world it is (they are) the technology no one is talking about.

Agreed. Aside from a lot of talk from VO's? Crickets.

A couple of studios I ISDN with (i.e. Sunspots) have tried iPDtL and like it, as I discovered during our ISDN session. I'm sure the rush isn't on yet as we wait for some other shoe to drop. How can it be so good and so cheap?

The folks who are paying $300-$400 per month to AT&T will be the turners of the tide.

I tried the Source Connect Now and liked it. Well, it worked, but my colleague's link to his account didn't work, and we had to both login as guests. The chat feature was a good addition, although it didn't work on my end. Also, the separate faders for each person in the session you can control was a really nice feature.

I'm still getting corporate and smaller radio producers keen on ipdtl and/or buying it.

When I told my colleague (he runs a audio post and recording studio and does VO) I did the test with (and he's a Source Connect Pro user) about the ipdtl Link + accounts he was very impressed with how anybody could connect to my studio that way.

As for ipdtl - watch that space because they have some spiffy updates coming up soon. Competition is a good thing!

I had a successful ipDTL session yesterday with a studio in Atlanta (linked with SLC, Utah) in which they recorded me direct to their DAW as they would an ISDN session. It went off without a hitch and everyone was all thumbs up.

I use Source Connect pretty regularly as either direct to other SC studio, or to bridge to ISDN. ISDN is not available on Vancouver Island, so it's nice that these other solutions are being more readily accepted.

I'm compelled to ask: How are you finding the bridge to ISDN? Do you have to give the client a whole lot of caveats ("Sure, I can sorta kinda do ISDN") or can you just say "yeah, we can do ISDN" without fear of misrepresenting yourself?

cheers,

Matto:

I have a client on Vancouver Island with a real, honest to goodness ISDN connection. Let me know if you want me to have him contact you (if he's willing to give up his monopoly of ISDN studios on Vancouver Is). I know he had to threaten the TelCo with a lawsuit to get them to put it in...
I made a portal for SC Now on my website, as well as a link to my IPDTL Link+ account. Couldn't possibly be more handy.

I generally tell folks that I'm available via Source Connect, ISDN bridge and Skype/phone patch.

When I get asked, "can you do ISDN?" I explain that it is a link/bridge with SC and if they do have Source Connect things will be a lot easier and cheaper.

Haha, that's sensational. I'm really not going to venture into ISDN at this stage, unless it is the only thing standing between an ongoing, highly lucrative gig. I've heard feedback from fellow Canadians how ridonkulously expensive it can be to install and maintain in Canada. Saying that, I will hit you up for the name of the talent on Van Isle, just so I have his details on hand...

When I asked a bunch of people from TelCo's here in Victoria about ISDN, the general response was "ISD-wuuhh??"

When we used to ask the phone companies here in the States about getting ISDN the first thing they'd do is try to sell us DSL.

Thanks for that interview Taji! I like this info: "We’re about to add a simple mixer, chat, script sharing, file transfer and recording – all in the browser."

Oh, yeah!!! Smile

I talked with Kevin last week about these improvements, and yes, they're really going to do this, it's in the works!

Competition is a good thing.
