While I'm certainly not on Mr. Bishop's list, I have the Perception mic and can't think of anything bad to say about it. Used it for a couple years with fine results, right up until Telefunken sent me one of each of their mics as a free gift.
Just kidding. I got a Neumann earlier this year. But the Perception served well for a long time. It's worth more than its price, certainly. _________________ Finally, Ford stops starting to say things and starts. |

i recently adopted a VO noob. here is what i recommended:
AT2020
Art USB DualPre
KRK KNS6400 cans
Audacity
so for around $300 she gets to see if this is something she is good at, something she enjoys and something she can (maybe, someday) make some money with - without getting an ulcer because she spent the kid's college money.
the AKG 220 was on my short list of recommended mics as well along with the studio projects B1. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I am new to this game. I've been working with a voice coach for the past 4 months and have a lovely shiny new demo. While workingg these past months I bought an AT2500 USB for learning and practice and it sounds quite good. My voice coach was impressed by it's sound on the recordings I sent to her, but I am looking to upgrade at this point.
Someone in the thread mentioned a mic being expensive for a Chinese mic. In my search for a higher quality mic should I be wary of the "Chinese mic"? Are the German mics better? Any generalities are appreciated. I was told by the profession sound engineer who recorded and engineered my demo that I naturally have a very warm voice so not to get anything that adds warmth, but that I should consider something that brings out "high tones" as mine aren't as strong. Thoughts? Also, I'd like to stay in the $225-300 range for a mic. Thanks. _________________ I am impelled, not to squeak like a grateful and apologetic mouse, but to roar like a lion out of pride in my profession. -John Steinbeck |

Actually, the Chinese and the Russians build some pretty decent low to mid priced mics. In fact, I discovered that many custom mic manufacturers in the U.S. buy a lot of their parts from China.
Studio Projects B1 and C1 are mics worth looking at. SE Electronics also has some inexpensive mics. Their "1000" models were quite good some years ago. Of course we're not buying any Russian mics right now.
If any mic interests you, Google the mic model and the word "review" and you'll hopefully find useful information.

for the record, I've had two Chinese mics crap out on me in the last year.. A Marshall V88 and a Studio Projects C1.. the Marshall was shipped back to factory and rebuilt with a new capsule.. resold, but took a beating on that mic .
The SP C1 suddenly went all crackly and staticy, just as the MXL V88 did.. Shame on Studio Projects for not returning ANY of my requests for info on how to service this mic.. _________________ Lee Kanne

Wow on the MXL going crackly. I will - quietly, don't tell anyone! - admit to having an MXL mic that has lasted (and not sounded really too bad!) for nine years now. Does the build quality vary that much, am I just lucky, or has their quality become toilet-bound? _________________ Finally, Ford stops starting to say things and starts. |

I have a couple of MXL mics and I think they're fine. That doesn't prevent me from wanting a German mic or two. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Need to clarify here that my mxl mics are actually branded Tascam and came with the US122 and 144 years ago. Special place in my heart for them but I've always assumed subpar since bundled and felt ashamed to admit. _________________ Finally, Ford stops starting to say things and starts. |
