G'day folks!
1st post, I think.
I'm looking to build my first vocal booth, as I have a fairly chaotic house and there doesn't seem to be anywhere quiet enough to record a decent demo here.
I've searched around, and the only thing I've come up with was the dawbox (mixed reviews). If you've had positive experiences, please share. Any recommendations or hyperlinks to share?
I'm going to require something in the 4x6 range, but preferably a diamond or other design big enough to do vocal or the occasional acoustic, that can minimize the boxy sound of parallel walls.
Budget around 1000-15000
Thanks everyone! |

While I cant offer advice, I would like to clarify. Is that 1000 (one thousand) to 15000 (fifteen-thousand) or was it an extra zero (as in fifteen hundred/one thousand five-hundred)
That would make a HUGE difference in the types of advice you will receive.
Good luck! |

1,500. My coffee hadn't kicked in yet and I was having withdrawal shakes. Lol
Also, something that can be taken apart and transported relatively easily would be preferred. I understand it wouldn't be as robust but I have to be rather transient for the time being. |

What we think of as a diamond often has sides just as parallel as a square or rectangle. Ideally, you want a trapezoid.
I investigated the Dawbox plans before deciding to just design my own. I believe theirs is a single wall design and I decided I wanted a double wall (which elevated the cost beyond the $1500 I would like to have spent). _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

carpenter would be a stretch, but I have the tools it would take, and can do a heck of a handcut dovetail (likely useless on this project). And after having my thumb surgically re-attached, I'm still not scared of a table saw I just treat them with a bit more respect these days. lol
So, I was thinking something like vocalbooth.com's diamond series. Not necessarily a perfect diamond... more a a five-sided, 48" per side design.
Exterior of Birch Ply or carpeted MDF
Frame w/ denim insulation
5/8" drywall
Mass Loaded Vinyl
5/8" drywall
auralex (or equivalent) pyramid
Haven't decided on the doors, and haven't seen a good plan yet for ventilation.
Anyone have recommendations? |

Looks good, but I would consider:
Exterior of Birch Ply or carpeted MDF
Mass Loaded Vinyl (attached to the outside of the frame)
Frame w/ denim insulation
5/8" drywall
Green Glue
5/8" drywall
auralex (or equivalent) pyramid
Mass loaded vinyl wants to be attached loosely, and sandwiching it between two layers of drywall would reduce some of its effectiveness.
MDF is cheaper than plywood, but if you're going to carpet over it anyway, you may want to consider 5/8" drywall for the exterior. It's even cheaper and a bit more dense. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Just my $.02 - I'm in the process of building an in-home booth also. Opting for 2x6's for the wall frame and staggered 2x3's for the studs. This way there's no solid contact between inside and outside booth walls. Can also weave insulation and vinyl between the studs for added sound proofing.
Good luck and please post pictures when you're done!
Cheers!
