I need to experiment a lot more, but last night I put up acoustic panels in my whisperroom. The treatment design is by the highly esteemed George Whittam, and the panels were built by ATS Acoustics.

Here's the breakdown of what I installed in the 3.5x3.5 double walled WR:
1. Two 4" open-backed bass traps to cover one corner
2. On each wall adjacent to that corner, two 2" 24x20 panels
3. On the wall opposite the corner I have two 2" 24x24 panels partly covering the unused window
4. 1 4" 24x24 ceiling cloud
5. 1 sheet of auralex over the door window

And the true test:
Before (booth with just the factory included auralex)

After:

Both are just dry unprocessed audio. I don't have very good ears, but it sounds like a huge improvement to me. Thanks so much to George for the help and to ATS Acoustics for building such beautiful panels!

Hi Julia,
It sounds much better as far as acoustics go. I'm hearing a lot of room tone. More in the "treated" file than in the first part of the "un-treated" file. Did the AC kick on at some point? The noise floor needs some work. But, the boxiness is gone now!

Thanks for the feedback! No AC running in the booth or room. Most likely it's building noise. That's the next challenge to overcome.

Wow, massive improvement, Julia! So glad it worked out as I had hoped.
A high-pass filter at 115Hz with an 8dB resonance bump takes care of the rumble very nicely, and with a gentle expander we're getting the RT reading down to about -58dB.
Here's with my TW Stack

The difference was quite astounding.

What I found interesting was the production without the sound treatment had a "harshness" to it...that was ONLY obvious (at least to me) when compared to the second production. In other words, the original wasn't bad and you would have thought it was fine....UNTIL you heard what it COULD sound like. The sound treatment gave you a much better, cleaner, fuller, richer sound. Makes me want to stop dragging my feet on my own room sound treatment.

Good Job. Laugh

Thank you! The most striking thing to my ears is that my voice sounds deeper and fuller. And the mic seems much more sensitive to little nuances. I'm going to have a lot of fun with this little space Smile

I have been through the whole acoustic panels-in-a WhisperRoom thing so I know how much work, how $$$$ it is but also what a DIFFERENCE it makes.

Plus it still looks like you still have plenty of room to in your booth. I love it!

Copy that

I picked up a 3.5 x 2.5 booth (the smallest WhisperRoom available) for insanely short money on Craigslist, and if it wasn't for a couple of people on this board, I don't think I could have made it happen

First off, the booth was too tall for my room so I had to leave the ceiling and floor off and reconstruct a thinner ceiling with 440 soundboard, double layer, covered in fabric. Secondly, constructing and installing three 2' x 4' Rockwool panels was a LOT of work. I have them covering three walls, Auralex stuffed in the corners as bass traps. Nothing on the ceiling, nothing on the windowed door. The panels are 2 inch deep. I would not be able to maneuver in the booth with 4 inch deep.

The acoustic treatment makes a huge difference over the stock Auralex sheets that came with the booth. The bigger difference is the AT 875r small shotgun mic (male deep baritone) as opposed to an LDC. I'm using a Hi pass @ 75hz, cut @ 500hz, and a +3db bump @ 2k, with a Waves Ren Vox providing the gate/expander/compression. It may not be perfect, but a half dozen or so clients since the booth has been in use seem to be happy.

The real challenge is the space, and how to implement script reading in that booth. There's no room for a standard copy stand, but after lots of experimentation and $$$, what seems to be working ok is a small 15' vga monitor mounted on the wall with a VESA Tv mount and a vga extension from the computer, mirroring the main display. I can start and stop the session, and read scripts within the booth, with nothing more than a small bluetooth travel mouse.

Right now I'm trying to get an iPad in there for script reading, and leave the monitor to start/stop/pause the session and basic editing. One of those mic stand clamps that holds the iPad seems to be working out, except I have to take the iPad out of the case ever time mount it. A pain. The last piece of the puzzle is some sort of clip or stand for those occasions when I need to read hard copy of script

I screwed one of these to the wall of a booth for a client, works great holding paper or tablet. http://www.staples.com/Rolodex-Expressions-Black-Wire-Mesh-Copyholder/product_566006
