Last week we lost Robin Williams, one of the greatest comedians of our time. And now Don Pardo, one of the greatest announcers of all time, has died at age 96. He will forever be an inspiration to me. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Sometime back in the 70's when Dinah Shore had her afternoon talk show (obviously I had too much time on my hands) her featured guest was Don Pardo. I remember nothing about the interview except that every time Don spoke she would burst out laughing. Of course by that time much of what he did had become kind of a parody of himself.
Even his name had become synonymous with Announcer. I was sent in for an audition with instructions that the client was looking for a Don Pardo sound, so I did my best to prep accordingly. When I got there it became obvious they were looking for a Johnny Olson sound.
Mr. Pardo was one of the best.

I remember geeking out when I heard Don on Weird Al's "I Lost On Jeopardy".
Hopefully no more of my heroes leave us for a good while... _________________ John LaPiana

A great voice and a unique delivery. When I worked at an NBC affiliate, we would get a closed circuit feed of stories from around the country for use on our local newscasts. An announcer would introduce the feed and describe each story. "Cut one, from Dalllas, Texas, is about the Vice President's speech.", etc. One day, Don Pardo was pulled in to intro the feed. It was the most entertaining delivery of a rather mundane task I'd ever heard. |

More sad news, though he clearly lived a long and productive life. I hope if I make it to my 90s that I'm still working. Truly an inspiration. _________________ Be well,

Both, having joined the network before television came about, Don Pardo and Bob Hope were the only two people to ever have a lifetime contract with NBC.
It was Don Pardo who first informed WNBC (New York) viewers of the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963.
The following year, with the debut of the original Jeopardy! game show from Studio 8G, he began receiving the daily acknowledgement many of us remember ("Thank you, Don Pardo.") from the show's host, Art Fleming. When Jeopardy! ended its run in January, 1975, Mr. Pardo's next steady gig began on October 11 of that year, just several feet down the hall, in Studio 8H: Saturday Night Live.
Thank you, Don Pardo. (Recorded in 2005.) _________________ Mike

Art Fleming may have thanked Don Pardo by name on Jeopardy in the 70s, but Bill Cullen did it way back in the 50s on the original Price Is Right. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
