I've changed out the mic cables and no joy. It's not occurring all the time butI have the last hour or so of an audiobook to record today, and i can't do that without knowing if the crackle is going to show up again. I'm monitoring with headphones and I don't hear it while I'm recording.

Have you done any "processing" to this file? Did it have the crackle in it from the very beginning, or is it possible you did some compression, noise reduction, EQ or other process and your editor put in some fireworks?

This piece did have some compression, but, alas, it's not from the compression because I noticed it at other times, without processing. Because I have a big deadline today, and it's intermittent, I've been trying to record what I can and at one point I could barely get a signal (which I did hear through my cans) , so I wiggled the mic cable and all was good. Sooo... the question is whether or not these are related.

The noise is like clockwork at 32ms apart.

That is to say, ain't likely the fault of any cabling or anything like that.

Have you tried simply resetting your audio interface?

Interesting! I was too busy getting into panic mode to notice that.

Do you mean like turning it off and back on again? I did unplug the USB for the interface, and it hasn't crackled since, though I'm not holding my breath. I also have a Symetrix channel strip in my chain which could be responsible.

Yes - yank the USB cable for a moment (long enough for your computer to notice it's been disconnected) - and then plug it back in. If your daw software is open when you do this, you may cause it to complain, so you might exit the daw first (my software gets all confused, but yours may not).

To my ears, and the regularity of the interval, it seems digital in nature, so I would look more at audio interface and computer than your processor.

One other thought - anything else on your computer trying to use the audio hardware when these glitches appear?

If it sounds fine in your headphones - assuming you're monitoring the analog signal - it's almost got to be something from the interface onward.

I have Chrome open, which I know is a hog, but usually something I keep open to do on-the-fly research. If it does come back, I may have to close out of everything else, just in case. So far so good though, no crackles since I yanked the USB out. Thanks for helping me narrow the problem down. My list was running from cables, to hardware, to software, to power issues. Fingers crossed!
