My friend is setting up a closet recording studio, and is looking at this combo.

When I started, I used a AT4040 in a closet. The 4040 has a wide pattern and very muddy lows: a bad choice to use in a small closet situation. It will sound boomy and tubby.

I don't know how much the 4040 and 4033a have in common, but would expect them to share some traits. I have a 4033a and.... use it in a closet sized space.... I would not!

I never met an AT mic I really liked... muddy at the bottom and too sibilant (on my voice). I've heard these comments again and again... but some people love them (just to underline the point that it's the whole voice/mic/room relationship).

On the other hand, I never met a Duet I didn't like!

it seems to me that with AT you have to think outside the box.

i have a 4050 in my ROOM - and it sounds good (to me) on my voice ... but it's in a room - not a booth. i have tried a 2020 in a hogan box and it does, indeed sound muddy --- so --- there's that.
