Hello all! I am a UK VO relocating to Boston for a year and intending to set up as soon as I can on arrival. Without knowing the property we'll be in yet it's hard to say what the challenges will be so I was thinking the way to go would maybe be a booth. Any thoughts on booths in general or a good place to get one?
If there are any Boston VO's out there with an ISDN studio, would you ever consider hiring your studio out on occasion to a lost Welsh VO, miles from home?!!javascript:emoticon('Shocked')

Hi Noni,

There's a number of ISDN rooms for hire in the Boston area. Soundtracks comes to mind, for one. As far as booths go, a look at Craigs List is often worthwhile, Ebay as well.....although the shipping can be costly.

Nice page BTW. I'm guessing from the bridge in the artwork, that you might be from the Swansea area?

Hi Chuck
Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, Soundtracks looks great!
I'm actually based in Caerleon which is in South East Wales just on the Welsh side of the Severn River Crossing (hence the bridge). Very kind of you to comment on the site, thanks!

Welcome to the board... us ex-pats should stick together... even if you are only temporary Smile

If it's only for a year, a booth could be a problem... you could spend too much time obtaining one... and then getting rid of it! I'm guessing that you'll only be able to make that decision once you see your digs. There are plenty here that will happily advise on non-booth alternatives. Get ready for information overload!

Has anyone mentioned the VO-BB newcomer duties yet? There's the chocolate for the girls (dark... they like 85%) cake for the boys and the llama duty... can't forget the llama duty.

... and with certain people here, a penchant for fancy footwear helps.

Welcome! Llama duty is a common assignment for newcomers. Also watercress in some form - sandwiches, I think. It's just the VO-BBs way of saying "hi and welcome"

WelshVO: I can get you on ISDN, my studio is 10 minutes north of Boston.

As far as short term booth setup goes, it depends on how noisy your space is. If trains and trucks are rumbling by, you'll need to do something serious. But if you can get a space that mutes noise from traffic, pets, people, and heating (there's not much cooling going on here any more), you might only need sound absorption (foam).

I've quickly tamed rooms before with Auralex Max Walls - they're 4 inch thick walls of foam that mount on included mic stands, setup takes 5 minutes. Beyond that: bass traps, real traps, and whatever other sonic sponges have been recommended here should have you set up to get the job done.

Hi Jeff

That is really good know, thank you so much!

It'd be great to hook up when I get there.

Thanks again
Noni
