Have you used it? Any specific things that would make on switch from another DAW to use this for VO?

At $39 I would definitely say go for it. There is no demo version. I've been using it for around 12 months now and it has a very pleasing sound to it. With Mixbus you are really using a console and not your typical DAW, you use gain staging and the basic EQ and Levelling/Comp/Limiting on each channel is all you need, I've lost interest in so many of my plugins. Editing is great, although my workflow is usually; record in Mixbus to get that Harrison sound, then export to Twisted wave and edit in that. Personally I think its an easy DAW to learn if you think 'CONSOLE' and yes its great for VO.

okay, is this is an interface, or a plug-in? or......? Or is it like a virtual mixer.

IOW If you have a decent mic and pre, what is the advantage to adding this?

Not arguing, just genuinely curious. Laugh

It's a DAW that emulates the workflow and performance of a legendary mixing console.... One that has been said to have changed the industry in its time.

If you like your current setup and workflow.... Keep movin'.... Nuthin' to see here...

If you like to play with new stuff, $39 is cheap for gearitis. Inoccent

Then you want the console on which the Mixbus is based.

In the studio world, two names are spoken with reverence.... Dave Harrison and Rupert Neve. Most of the world's most famous recordings and films were produced on consoles designed by one or the other. Ninja

It seems I missed part of the discussion. What I will add is that if you are the kind of person who records dry, maybe a slight amount of eq or compression, you like or maybe came from a console background, you may find Mixbus is for you.

Like HeyGuido mentioned, switching when you're already proficient with the tool you're using may not be the path, unless you still have a need for multitrack recording.

Also, this was initially built on Ardour, which at the time, was designed as an Open Source option for ProTools (during the days PT was used for music production). Some of this code is also used in Harrison's consoles, which still push dramatic dialogue on a daily basis today.

Features for someone in VO?
Stable. Never fails.
Destructive recording. Yeah, "destructive" baby!
Simple to use. Add the tracks, hit record.
Never use a plugin to sidestep proper gain staging again.

Could go on for quite some time.

so you can record with this thing with the Limiter engaged, instead of having to do it after the fact, for example?

Rob, no, not the traditional sense you may be thinking. To keep things simple, it "can" be done but the typical setup involves the audio from the source, usually a mic and some type of channel strip, into the audio interface, through JACK and into Harrison Mixbus (HMB). JACK is a program that routes audio throughout the system. So technically, JACK could route the audio through a software or hardware limiter prior to HMB. Once in HMB, it's gain staging as usual.

The clip below took all of four minutes to record and slap together with HMB without any limiting on the input - straight from the UMT70s (for those of you that loathe the 416, that's for you), Audio Upgrades High Speed Mic Pre and into Mixbus. I even threw on an Isotope VST automated reverb.... it's just a really great app and the potential is only limited by your imagination.

Harrison Mixbus Audio Clip

I've been using HMB for a while, so it might take you FIVE MINUTES to do something similar.

Sorry, I thought you had sold it awhile back.. Anyway, not relevant to the topic, my bad.

(plus you know how easily I get distracted by mic talk)

Back to the Mixbus, I don't normally do much processing but I can see where maybe this could theoretically eliminate the need for an outboard pre (I'm using a John Hardy right now), since it apparently provides that Harrison "sound". If that's the case it could be useful for me if my pre ever goes down.
