I have a friend that has a very nice recording studio and he has gone through a lot of headphones. I'm fortunate enough to get to try a lot of them and while there are a lot of good ones out there, I always find myself happy that I have my ATH-M50.

I havent found another set that sounds as flat and full as them.

My only caveat is that I do not do anything longer than a 30-40 minutes so I cant say how comfortable theyd be for long form.

Probably longest I've had them on is 45 minutes but I will say that they didnt bother me at all.

They do cost more than $100 but they have come down in price.

Me too Rob. Unless I'm on ISDN or phone patch etc.

It took quite a while to get used to but now I feel weird and distracted when I DO wear cans. Once you've got your mic technique nailed down, I can't think of a good reason to wear cans at all. In my case, I can't help but listen to myself and make those myriad, minuscule, millisecond judgements about my performance, forcing my voice this way and that. Inevitably the result is something less natural - more polished perhaps - but it's the wrinkles that people love about us.

exactly Colin.

I have cans in my booth for sessions, but I'm not wearing them. They're propped up and open so I can hear the client but that is it.

That sounds worth a try.

I too only use cans for directed sessions, but even then I'm much more comfortable with my cheapo earbuds. I don't notice I'm wearing them at all and they work fine in most studios, but in a couple of studios they've caused deafening feedback and I've had to use their cans instead.

I can never get the hang of that half-on half-off thing some people do, so propping them up nearby could be the answer.

I never wear them while tracking. I tried it a few times and positively hated the experience.

Only to edit.

I'm right there with you all. I don't wear headphones unless doing a phone patch with a client or at a studio other than my own. I use monitors when I'm doing Source Connect also because all the studios that I work with use a talkback mic that they mute themselves when I'm recording. When I DO have to use cans, I just have one ear in and one ear out.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Sony MDR 7506 (or MDR V6)... Another BIG plus is when the ear pads need to be replaced, the aftermarket variety can be purchased very inexpensively.

I highly recommend these replacement pads... Beyerdynamic makes them but they fit the Sony MDR series perfectly. Comfy velour instead of the black gunk that starts to flake after a couple of months.

I don't wear headphones when recording and just wear earbuds to hear the client during phone-directed sessions - mainly because I move my head around so much when I'm speaking (shoulder shrug, head tilt, nodding, etc.) that the headphones squeak and the mic picks up those sounds.

I haven't used headphones in years. I guess that has something to do with how long mine have lasted. Smile

Actually, I loaned them to the morning guy at the radio station a couple of years ago. He's used them every weekday since and they still work fine.
