I have waxed poetically about the much lamented Apple "Thunder-boomer and Light-it-up" connection over the past four years as being another Apple folly. My prediction has come to fruition. See: http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/10/8181551/thunderbolt-lightning-usb-type-c-new-macbook

Thunder-pumper will not rest in pieces soon enough however as Apple is hoping an upgrade will put some life into the doomed connection.

External display via USB that isn't all slow and choppy would solve a lot of my problems. The thunderbolt stuff has been quite frustrating. If the Apollo Twin was USB I would have kept it around, but the conflict with the only thunderbolt port on my iMac being used by my external monitor meant it had to go away. Hooray for USB 3.1

Another reason I love the Mac Mini, which has Thunderbolt x2 or T-bolt and an HDMI (for previous gen. Minis). USB-C seems very similar to Lighting connector, carries much of the same data.
Helpful article (Nokia used USB-C 1st)
