Get a bowl of popcorn, this will take you a while:

Thanks to Mike Varela, Lab engineer and Nuance Tone owner, for putting this together, it was time consuming! _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Thanks for the link George, but when I clicked on the file to listen, NOTHING was played back.
Is it my set up or is there a problem on the other end ? _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Huh yes same thing here Scott. Just go to the bottom left and there's the option to download in either wav. or mp3. then you can bring them up in your DAW.
Cheers

That's why I use a 416.
TLM102 solid and smooth.
Harlan Hogan mic surprisingly decent.
Thanks for the test George. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

From $150 to $3,200 it's amazing how many of those mics were amazingly similar in sound quality to me. None seemed shoulders above any other and just a few were clearly crappy sounding.
Of course the 416 sounded different, but it's a different animal. Not necessarily better, just different.
Thanks for the effort!

From a natural sounding standpoint, the mojave sounds very natural but a little tubby, the U87 really does capture (at least in my mind) the voice without hype in certain areas and the 103 and even 102 weren't far behind it. I found the Manley to be smoother and ballsier but still pretty natural. A lot of the cheaper mics really do show their cheapness when compared to higher end mics. You can definitely tell that the 416 is not a "natural" sounding mic. So if 100% natural sound is what one is going for, the 416 is not the ticket but it sure does give some girth and cutting power to a voice.
I personally wouldn't mind having a few of those mics. I'm really hearing how the room shapes the sound though. I think I'm going to spend some time really tweaking my room to get the sound I'm looking for |

One of the better shootouts I've seen.
What these shootouts don't tell you, however, is how the mics will sound after compression and EQ and how they will sit in a busy mix. To me that's the difference between a mic that pleases my aesthetic, and one that is a useful tool for the work that we (and engineers ) do. |

Rob, just download the wav. files at the bottom left of page and open each one in your DAW and process away.
George thanks for the post, much appreciated

Eh, Voxman I'm not exactly a maestro of EQ and compression and generally leave that part up to the big boys (and girls).
That's part of the reason I defaulted to the industry standard mics, which I already know take EQ and compression well. |

The Harlan Hogan, the Oktava and the Rode NT 1A. in a blind listeniing test stood up well to the Manley, the Charter Oaks, and the upper end Neumann's.
FWIW, I stacked up the Mp3 of Casey's VO of almost all of the mics in TW to get a look at the waveform.. there seems to be a distinctive grouping..
the Senn 416, AT 875r, AT 3035, TLM 102, NTG 3, and Shure Sm7 all had almost graphically identical waveforms..
It would have been interesting to see how the beloved and revered CAD e100s stacked up in all of this.
