#2 sounds thin compared to #1, also gives the feel that you're "further away." I think #1, although maybe just a tad bit boomy, sounds rich and robust...more present and intimate.

I like #2 better.

#1 almost sounds like a dynamic mic to me.

(not that there's anything wrong with that, but I still like #2 better)

Hi Graeme!

I prefer #1, it has more "presence" it feels like you are sitting here with me as you tell me more about pigs.

This is not a "when pigs fly moment", but I feel #2 is natural, less pumped than #1. This, (#2) is the sound many producers are looking for in today's VO marketplace.

Sample #2 is not as "forward" as the other, but brings it's own "presence" into play.

If I had to listen for more than a few minutes, absolutely #2.

#1 sounds more up front but I was weary of it by the end of the sample (that's not a comment on your voice or read).

Had the same thoughts as Lance (without reading his comments)

Mic 2 for the longer reads.

#1 sounds like a Shure SM7B with a hyped upper mid range minus the hi pass filter.... on my system I got some very crackly "SSS;s"

#2 sounds very light on the low end, but clearer and more pleasing to listen to over the long haul...

Number one sounds a little gritty and distorted to my humble ears.

Number two, less in your face - easier on the ear - more natural. Could use a little EQ perhaps.

1 -Oh dear me no!
2 - How delightful. Add salt or sugar to cater for individual taste preference.

First - thanks to all for your advice - especially to Frank F for sending some samples demonstrating how mic #2 was much better to work with in the mix Smile

I should explain that the samples were not apples-to-oranges, but were a reasonable representation of the two mics involved.

The first sample was recorded with one of the new Neumann U47 fet reissue mics. I originally had fallen in love with it (for the wrong reasons) and subsequently put it back in the box.

The second mic was my U87ai. Should never have doubted my faithful friend Smile

Had exactly the same scenario here Graeme, with the same two mics. 47FET was initially seductive but not as easy to work as the U87ai. And as for the noise floor; wasn't even close. The modern U87ai is so hot it's almost line level - exceptionally quiet.
