I like the VoiceMaster very much, Mark; it's been serving me well for over 10 years, now. I'd been doing a lot of work for several years in the studio of a producer/engineer back then and, based on the sonic quality of the playback – and the recommendations of the producer/engineer – I bought one.
[Edit]: I especially like it because its inputs and outputs make it possible to patch directly and permanently to and from (send/receive) my Telos Zephyr ISDN codec, while simultaneously feeding signal to my computer.
However, it has many more features than I've been using (I use only the compressor [and very little]). And I'm not sure if they're available new anymore. By now, I'd imagine they've moved on. One note: after I began experiencing an issue with the headphones (one channel was intermittent), I had an independent tech replace ALL the capacitors about two years ago. But the VoiceMaster still sounds every bit as good – and extremely quiet – as it did when I bought it.
I would highly recommend Focusrite products; whether you can find a VoiceMaster Pro used (as of this writing, there are several being offered on eBay; have it checked out by a good tech before buying), or a newer offering. _________________ Mike

But seriously, MKH-416 is the daily driver.
I also have a Harlan Hogan VO-A1 (retired), which isn't a bad mic at all, an RE-20, which I almost never use any more, and an MXL V67N for the travel rig. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

CAD E100s straight into a Scarlett 2i2. Sometimes with the CAD HPF on, sometimes not. The CAD can get a bit dark with a heftier preamp. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

416 - Cheap compared to the other industry standard, works great in hotel rooms, used by some of the biggest names in the business. I've decided to stick with it. |

Focusrite has Rupert Neve designs in their products and have a great history.
Having a background in music I am biased to Neve.
I use a Rode NTK or Sennheiser MKH415 into a Neve Portico 5032 to a Focusrite Forte Interface. The Focusrite also serves as a backup if the Neve has any issues. Additionally I have a Lexicon U42S and Centrance Micport Pro to back up the Forte as interfaces. |

MKH416 & CAD E100s
Both used daily. Connected via an Audient iD22.
Dig deeper into the back of the cupboard, and you'll find a motley collection of relatively cheap, retired microphones.
Shure SM7B - classic dynamic mic - great for audiobooks, but retired
AKG Perception 220 - utility mic. used for Skype calls and whenever not in the booth.
MXL V88 - love this mic. Emergency back-up.
MXL 2003a - a good solid, honest mic... I just donated it to a colleague.
MXL V69me (re-tubed) - sometimes you just got to tube it.
AT2020 - Total crap (on my voice). I have no idea why I bought it.... oh yeah, it was cheap.
Heil PR40 - Honorable mention. The only mic I've ever sold... I bought the Kool-aid on this one and it never worked out for me. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

MKH416 --> Focusrite ISA430 MkII --> Focusrite Scarlett 8i6
The ISA430 was a nice upgrade from a dbx286a that served me well for many years. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

Thanks for that fact I'd forgotten, Eddie. Rupert Neve was especially known for his audio mixing consoles. One of the first hit songs to have been recorded on a Neve console was The Beatles' first single, "Love Me Do," at what was then EMI (now Abbey Road) Studios.
Several years later, Rupert Neve was hired to custom-build the air studio console for what would become the legendary "MusicRadio WABC," seen on this page:

Program Director Rick Sklar's idea to put the air talent and engineer in the same room and facing each other ratcheted the on-air electricity up a few notches. _________________ Mike
