Is anyone on the board using one of these for VO?

Slightly smaller capsule than most large membrane Neumanns... performance is just as big. Brilliant microphone for picking up piano, violin and vocals. Careful, proximity over-sensitive. Never use without pop screen if used for vocals. Don't have one, but have used it dozens of times in other facilities.

Better and WAY better. The 147 is right up there with the absolute best in the business. Also the 147 is more a universal capsule, no unwanted coloring with both male and female voices, therefore a widely used model in the upper-bucks region.

You might want to do a search on gearslutz.com. Reports of strong upper mid-range on some male voices. May sound "whiney" on some voices. May want to consider or compare to M149 before making an investment. Also reports of advantage of matching certain preamps to M147.
Let us know what you find out.

Gee... an M-149 is no comparison.... that's the bomb. Also considerably more expensive.

I have both the 103 and the M147 and they are both excellent mics with pretty distinctive characteristics. The 103 is brighter and more sensitive to pops while the M147 has an AMAZING warm sound and doesn't feel that susceptible to pops and mouth noise. Having said that, I wouldn't EVER use either one without a pop filter. I chose the 147 over the 149 for a few reasons. They are very similar in sound, with the 149 having an adjustable cardioid pattern. I don't think that is a huge selling point unless you were going to use it for musical instruments along with v/o. And, it is about a thousand bucks more. I've had my 147 for about 3 months and I can't say enough nice things about it! It all comes down to your voice 'type'. Do you have a lot of resonance and bass in your voice, etc.

I'm also hearing great things about the TLM49, too. Smile

Thanks ever-so-much for re-iterating something I have stated many times. Each voice has distinct characteristics and each microphone pics up some or all or more than what is fed into it. G.I.G.O.

It's a personal choice. Choosing your personal microphone is like choosing your underwear. The undies may fit you perfect, but would you want to wear some one else's? Would you allow another person to wear your undies? I think not.

Microphone's are a personal choice. Yes, I use the industry best - the "Top Shelf" of microphones, a U-87 Gold. Not because someone else suggested or is using it, but because it fit's my voice and style. I have "broke-it-in" to fit me, and no one else. I may use a C-12 - for a different sound, or an AKG 414, or a Marshall V-69 or 990, or... It all depends on what I want for that particular project or gig.

My equipment exemplifies what I want to do with my style and sound. The right pre- for me is "X", the right cables are "Y", the right soundcard is "Z"... Is what I use within your budget and your 'sound"?

If you cannot try a microphone with your equipment and your voice, it may not be right for YOU, even though the studio you use has the same microphone and you sound great when recording at that location - do you have the exact same equipment and room acoustics at home as they have at the studio?

Comparisons are for those who don't have anything better to do with their time and is opinion based. A comparison can give you some basic information about how a mic may sound tinny, thin, shrill, fat, or warm; but a written comparison or even another opinion cannot tell you how it sounds with your voice, equipment, style, or acoustics. You have to try it out for yourself.

It's funny that I'm asking the same question that beginning musicians ask about musical instruments and find myself getting the same asnwer that I end up giving to them.

You have to play the instrument to find out if it's right for you.

Time to go "play" some mics.

Chuck, you have just had an epiphany - one of those "Ah-ha" moments. Your voice is an isntrument which you learn how to play.

Choosing the right tools to reproduce your instruments creations is just as important as how you play the instrument.
