Recently I added a few panels in my small space to improve the acoustics. What I didn't think about was that because the ceiling comes into my small space at a sharp angle, the panel was actually causing more problems than solving them !

So, I removed 2 panels near my mic (when I stand up) and the improvement is quite clear to me. But of course, I really need your set of ears to confirm that.

After the previous post, I muttered: "SELF! Since testing out the acoustics of your microphone in relation to that sloping ceiling and the obviously home-made acoustic panel, (The wrinkles in the covering fabric are a dead giveaway that it wasn't created in some cool factory!) you've made other changes. Why don't we do some mic placement experiments.

I did turn the mixer so it's face isn't an acoustic mirror bouncing right back at me or the mic location.

I moved the mic around the room and made test recordings. It finally ended up last night within inches of where it started the day, but it's orientation related to my mouth, and in relation to the angled ceiling and angled acoustic panel is now changed.

I don't know if it sounds better, but it sounds different. I convinced myself the new different was better.

Lesson learned. Never assume your current set up is perfect.

Thanks Sean for the compliment, and Vernon for the feedback.

The panels in question are quite professional. (If anyone wants to know who makes them I will be happy to share that as they are really good) The problem was, that because the ceiling comes into the space at different angles, it rather complicates my use of the panels.

And the one panel that I removed had been in a bad position because the sound-waves were reflecting off of the wooden side of the panel, and reflecting the bass frequencies rather than absorbing them.

Once I removed that panel the recordings sounded better Smile
