...record one actor in one location and a second actor in another location simultaneously?

I know ISDN can do it, but what about Source-Connect or ipDTL? And is the delay just too horrible to even do a dialogue spot?

Just scouting out my options... Laugh

Yep! ipDTL has almost no delay. I personally have done dialogue with another actor in another studio with both Source Connect and ipDTL, and Source Connect requires you to kind of compensate for the delay and start lines early to overcome the delay. ipDTL does not require that. It is as fast as ISDN so the latency is extremely minimal and not distracting at all. Source Connect NOW also allows minimal delay but I have not personally done dialogue with Source Connect NOW. None of the solutions are "horrible" but stand alone Source Connect is definitely challenging and very noticeable. I've also done dialogue with ipDTL bridged to ISDN and it had almost no delay.

You might be able to with Source Connect Now (using guest links)
or IPDTL, also using guest links.

Yes, I'm pretty sure Source Connect Now can do that.

All non-ISDN (i.e. internet) solutions will have some problems at some time with latency and/or disappearing bandwidth. That being said, you can get good sessions from ipDTL, SC Now, etc. - good enough to record a session with.

We now record the Voice Over Cafe podcast (with around five participants) over SC Now and get some very good results. Just set up as host and invite whoever you want.

Keep your fingers crossed and you should have a stable session.

Ok, good -- I signed up for SC Now, but haven't done anything more with it, yet. Time to figure it out, I reckon... Smile

Thank you!

SourceConnect have a web-based 'lite' version at the moment which is free to use, and will be until early 2016. I've been taking advantage of it as often as I can! The latency is pretty low, and it works quite nicely. It's not quite as awesome as full version, but worth a shot if you only want to try it out once or twice - even the 'free trial' of the full version requires you to buy an iLok, which will run you around $40.

I haven't heard of the lite version. I can't find it on the site either, are you talking about Live or Now?

SCN is a good option, and they have conferencing now...but I've been amazed at working with video playback for dubbing on both ipDTL and SessionLink Pro (especially with SLP).

Re-post from another thread, but relevant here:

SC Standard 3.8 allows definable buffers. The low setting will provide 1/3rd to possibly a little more than 1/2 a second less latency.

The reason people might not want such low latency is that it can make the stream unstable. It's all a trade off really. Stability vs latency. Source-Connect will not "mask" errors by stretching time or changing its quality once connected. That is a good thing, especially for the record side of the connection. Usually especially for the record side, a stable stream is more important to achieve compared to a super low latency stream. Thus it's ok for the talent side of a connection to run with low buffers as long as they can understand what being said to them then the record side should adjust their buffers to allow for the most stable possible connection at the lowest latency they would like to risk.

That said, you can just do a "double ender" and have both talent record on their ends, then it doesn't matter what method you use to monitor the other end as much.
