What do you real gearheads think, which is more useful, a micpre with a compressor or one with an eq ?
A company in the UK is having a Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale on 2 Rupert Neves Portico units, the 5015H and the 5032. Prices are almost the same.
Which would you choose and why ?
Just wondering ! _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

I say "stop getitis". Uess you arte doing full production spots or projects, your clients expect non produced elements.

If you must. Imo 5032. I don't compress any auditions only eq. Set it and forget it.
I rarely use comp. & let the client do it if absolutely necessary.
5032 has hpf that's a nice feature & silk is subtle &nice too. The pre is excellent. |

Thanks Frank for the reminder. This is not about "getitis". I am trying to solve a problem and would like a very quiet, clean micpre with a built-in hpf.
Thanks Eddie for the feedback on your micpre. I wondered if the silk was a nice addition, and wondered if the EQ or Comp might be useful. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

My mic pre, the Focusrite Platinum VoiceMaster Pro, has EQ and compression (among several other options), but all I use is barely enough compression to tame peaks for the ultra-hype reads (which I really don't enjoy doing) and when a normal read requires an occasional loud passage. Otherwise, the compression threshold is never reached. _________________ Mike

915 euros without VAT. Maybe they have a mistake on their website. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Yes, that is a great deal. I think there is a problem with their website as their prices are the same in Pounds, Euros and Dollars.
I wrote them to let them know they may have a problem and am waiting to find out what is the story.
Thanks again for your feedback. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Are you able to be more specific about the problem you are trying to solve? |

Well, this is a long story but will try to make it short.
There is a studio in Europe that would like to work with me, but when we did a SessionLink Pro connection the engineer said there was a "hiss" in my audio chain. The engineer there thought the "problem" was my micpre. (I am not so sure).
Had George Whittam's team check it out and they told me that my audio quality was, "perfectly fine, and would be acceptable (more than acceptable) to the vast majority of production clients you will run across in your career."
However, I would like to get some work through this studio so I am considering getting something that I know is very clean, with lots of gain, that has a hpf. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Before you buy anything new, have you considered connecting with someone else via SessionLink Pro to see if the hiss was, perhaps, a fluke? _________________ Mike

Thanks Mike for the suggestion. We did 2 sessions over a month apart with the same results. I also uploaded some files to dropbox after the second session for the engineer to check out.
The last 2 files I uploaded were the ones he commented on writing that the "hiss" was still there. They are the same recordings that George Whittams team commented on.
I don't mind making an investment if I know it will pay itself back _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Yes, my point being, as George found no issues with the audio, try a test with someone OTHER than the same studio. The possibility does exist that there is something on THEIR end or a connectivity issue somewhere between you and them that is causing the problem. _________________ Mike

Could be a possible collision of cultures here. Europe - buy less stuff. US buy more stuff. Europe - Sounds fine. US crank up gain until it doesn't sound fine.
We need to achieve - Too busy listening to notice the audio quality as opposed to "too busy hearing the audio quality to listen".
Tough call. |
