Hello,

I really hate my mic. Its an Audio Technica AT2020. In spite of it being "okay", by most standards, I can't get good levels out of my setup without the noise floor getting crazy high. Also I want to have something decent to future proof myself.

So, I borrowed an Shure SM7B from a friend. I hear this mic works well in small spaces, and can sound good on a mellow voice such as myself. Below are a few quick reads from Red Badge of Courage. They are labeled appropriately.

If you would be so kind as to tell me how you think the SM7B sounds on me I'd appreciate it. At first blush, I think it sounds dynamite. I also have attached a "control" specimen of the AT2020 for comparison. Also, please let me know how proximity is helping/hurting on the Shure. First read is about 10 inches back, 2nd is right up on the wind screen.

Thanks!

Hey Paul,

The one thing that stood out to me was lack of gain which is an issue with dynamics - I use an RE20 and suffer from the same wimpy level issue at times.

A cloudlifter might or might not help in your chain. It didn't fit well with my system but I know that a lot of folks have luck with them on dynamics and ribbons.

Here is the deal - you will need to compensate on the processing side and not leave these flat as they come off the mic.

What I did here is to apply some mild EQ and light compression to add some gain and then normalized. You should at minimum normalize levels - I use -3db as my parameter. If you create an unacceptable noise floor you can use background removal to get rid of it as long as it doesn't disrort your primary audio. I did this in the #2 sample.

Hope this helps.

Anyway, hope this helps. It sounds pretty clean to me other than that, but
