backstory:

mac pro
3.39GHz intel i5
32gb RAM
NVIDIA GTX 760 2mb video

issue:

when i have a heavy after effects render going - i REALLY bog down - which is to be expected - but when i check - AE is only using 18% of that 32mb.

question:

can i, somehow, allocate more RAM to AE in order to render faster?

nope --- already maxed out --- i have 29gb available for AE - 3gb for other apps.

i DID check the "render multiple frames simultaneously" box --- we'll see if that helps ... i also emptied the scratch disk cache & am cleaning the database & cache ---

Todd,

I was just working on an AE project the past couple days and I'm seeing the same behavior with CC 2015. Sometimes it REALLY bogs down though I think I've got mine set to 60% of RAM or something. It would run fine then really bog down, then a few minutes later lighten up, even though there were no heavy effects applied anywhere. Just sort of odd behavior. Even while working in it, it seemed to have trouble (randomly) refreshing the screen when there was type present.

Annoying but I got the damned project done.

the odd part is --- it zooms through the heavy graphics/3d stuff - then when it gets to the tail --- it just takes a ... well it bogs right down. trying it again after clearing all the caches & restarting.

Yeah, same thing I saw here: bogs down at weird spots, not where I really expected it to.

RAM, CPU and GPU loads are not directly related. Your GPU and CPU can be slammed during render and the RAM can be mostly free. It uses as much RAM as it needs to get the job done, and uses every last ounce of processing power.
