VO-BB - 19 YEARS OLD!

Greetings collective - my U87 shock mount's elastics are terribly stretched out and need to be replaced as they aren't guarding against any shocking but just weakly leaning to one side. And of course I'm looking for the DIY $1.25 version of how to replace these instead of purchasing them from Neumann as my Benjamins have better things to attend to. Anybody have any suggestions of what materials I can use? Do hair elastics work at all? I'm open to try anything, at least with regards to the above request. Thanks!

what about just going to the fabric store and picking up a couple feet of elastic band + some metal "Crimp tubes". or just tie it together, preferably with a double sheet bend.

I'd bite the bullet and go for a genuine Neumann spare. You could spend a lot of time trying to make a DIY solution that may, or may not be 100% secure. I wouldn't have the patience myself and why take risks with your baby?

Scruncis you find in the hair care department of your local drug/department store are basically the same thing, cloth covered rubber bands. You might try those if you can find the proper size and strength.

That's what I was thinking Bruce. And since I have shorter hair now I have a bunch of them lying around. I'll see what I can rig up. If not, I'll go the Ellis route and see if that works. Last resort I can always bite the bullet and get them from Neumann. Thanks all!

Maybe I shouldn't be so quick to admit to owning a whole bunch of Scuncis... but I do. I've used them for mic mount elastics. If in doubt about their strength or reliability... just double them up.

Little know fact... the shock mount that comes included with some sub-$150 microphones is as well-built and solid as the Neumann EA87 mount... which retails at B&H for $379 ... sometimes, you pay for a name... sometimes it's worth it... sometimes not.

Try the "already laying in drawer" solution before splurging $11.95 each for the Neumann ones... although they are probably made to exacting German engineering standards. (sarcasm alert).

Of course... the other side to this argument is: "Why have a $3,500 microphone only to fix it with a hair-tie?"
