R&R Joel's thread got me thinking... and that usually means trouble. Gasp

I use the audio booth at my station for VO and it's equipped with a Sennheiser MD421. I've already got an NTK at home but I was thinking about adding a dynamic mic to my personal stash.

Any recommendations on a good dynamic mic for vocals that I can swap quickly for the Sennheiser? I'd have to get another mount too since the 421 has that funky clip.

I've heard good things about the Heil PR40.

I've trialed a PR40, nice quite mic, but it sounded a bit harsh on the high end to my ears. I picked up an RE20 instead, to go alogn with my Rode NT2.

FWIW I believe Leo LaPorte is using the PR40 on his TWIT podcasts.

I'd recommend demo'ing the Heil PR-40 for sure. Remember, It's already eq'd for voice (kind of) so you don't have to add as much processing as you would for the RE20. Yes, it is airy at the top end like a condenser so adjust accordingly.

You couold probably pick up at 421 on EBay. Then you'd have the same mic as your station's audio booth.

Again, thanks in advance for not making personal attacks or hate mail. Smile But, the Behringer XM8500 ($20) has made a great addition to my mic collection. I keep my RE20 on bass rolloff. This little work horse is real close. It will need a good pop filter. But for $20 it's a great find. If it hurts your reputation ordereing from a music company, Smile B&H Photo has them. Well...they're out of stock.

If you're interested, I found a demo I did a year ago of the XM8500/re20/re20 with rolloff back to back so you can hear the difference.
First is the XM8500
Second is RE20 flat
Third is RE20 with bass rolloff

If you're going in the SM7B-direction, make sure you use a good mic pre like a Symetrix 528E or TLAudio 5051 Ivory series, because the SM7B gives only little signal output. You will need loads of processing for it to become useful for VO-ing.

Along the same lines, which of the dynamic mics mentioned above or that you've not unveiled yet in your clever reply is bomber? That is to say, what dynamic mic would you recommend for travel?
Curious in Salt Lake County...

For travel? Heil PR-20. Studio quality in a hand-held.
