This may be a rather obscure request but if anyone knows I'm guessing they are on this board..

I use Adobe Audition 5.5

The diagnostics functions including shortening silence are unable to be keyboard shortcut / macroed

Looking for a plug-in that will scan my file and shorten the silence to my specifications via a hotkey.

It doesn't seem to be possible in Adobe but was thinking there might be a VST plugin that would do it.

Anyone geeky enough about workflow automation to figure out a way to do this yet?

Many thanks,

Drew

Quicksilver,

I've searched for the same thing, but have long since reconciled myself to selecting, tapping "S", and hitting Enter. Actually, I kind of like the control, as I expect (engaging my rationalization engine here) I'd have to fix any plug-in's work, as even one with highly modifiable parameters would likely chop some ends or--if pulled back on the aggro scale--not do enough. That said, if I come upon a better solution that can save time, I'll happily pass along.

I can't try it right now but can the diagnostics functions be used in a favorite? Favorites can be hotkeyed.

Your thought seems reasonable enough, Jason; but I just tried it and got nada. Audition would not allow me to save as a Favorite because the action was "unsupported." I tried it with DeClicker as well for laughs, and got the same response. So I wonder if any "process" action is simply un-favoritable?

The current versions(s) of Audition... starting about ver 6.0 deal with preprogramming and macros and things attached to keystrokes differently than what we were used to in the earlier versions. That is why a lot of voice people appear to have a "like" for ver. 1.5, 2.0, 3.0. The roots of Cool Edit which was acquired and became Audition were closely tied to the broadcast world.

In the Adobe world, they know "the big money" is in selling their video product and making Audition a bit more MUSIC recording centric... to support the music that goes into videos.

There are days when we who do something so simple, so mundane as record and edit the spoken word have maybe been reduced to beggars waiting for crumbs to fall off the dining table.

In the world of Adobe Audition FAVORITES are no longer FAVORITES as we knew them in the past.

Going back to the original post of this thread: I see the editing process as some kind of art.... performed with artistic taste. Is it really part of our "art" to make all segments of room tone of exactly equal length?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I still haven't found a way to shorten silence via hot key but I have found that 5.5 will allow you to favorite and hotkey the DeClicker. Odd that shorten silence is the only diagnostics function that doesn't support that.

Those macros are like magic.

I've quite enjoyed refining my hot keys too. Saves so much editing time.

I don't know if it is going to be possible. You can't assign the elements of the process (i.e. Scan and then Delete All) to hotkeys so you'd have to do a macro that involves the mouse via some other program I think. I'm working in CS6 but I will try it out on CC when I'm back in the studio.
