I think you need to amplify to zero.

OK, I amplified to zero... and now it says:

Peak: -94.6 dB

Clearly I'm not qualified to join the Audio Nerd Club.

Hei Kristin,

Where are you recording, in an anechoic chamber ?

On a very quiet morning I've seen -85 dB on the RMS measurement while just recording the room tone, but never anywhere close to that on the Peak reading.

What is your audio chain ? Smile

Kristin, do you have a noise gate in your chain?

I'm recording in my booth -- microphone into an m-audio fast track into my Mac. No gate -- it's totally raw.

Hmmm... And you're not turning the input gain down manually for the silent sections? Something's odd here. The numbers you posted are numbers you'd expect to see if you were just measuring the electrical noise of the equipment...

Nope, I don't ever touch my settings -- I'm too afraid I'll screw something up.

Maybe I'm not reading it right... ? It's not a big deal, I was just curious what my noise floor was. I'm not going to worry about it -- if it sounds good, it is good. Smile
