So I got the Tube MP yesterday, and my NOS Sylvania valve today. I just swapped the tube in after the kid went to bed, and did a softer read as a test. I still have to put it through its paces, but this seems to have a little more warmth than a similar read with my iTrack Solo.

I wasn't expecting a 737, but for being out of pocket $30 for the Tube MP and $15 for the new tube, I'm very pleased. Definitely warrants further exploration.

This is with a 416, completely unprocessed except for normalization.

I like that. A bit of hiss, but you had the gain up high because this was a quiet read, right?

Correct... I still need to play with it and see if hitting the +20db switch and dialing the gain back has any impact on the hiss. I'm traveling for my day job right now, so I'll experiment more when I return.

In audacity it looked like a lot of the hiss was at 10k and above, so easy to filter if nothing else.

FWIW, I like the new production Tung Sols for voice over.

...and don't forget you can get a little of that nice harmonic distortion with plugins. I just installed this free one and it gives just a tasty touch of valve vibes without any added hiss.

Check this out - the second version has the tube amp plugin applied. Subtle, but I like it. Smile

I'll definitely add that plug-in to my list to play with when I get home... thanks for the info, I guess I wrongfully assumed that Chinese tubes would be garbage.

The Tung Sols are made in Russia. They do sound Chinese! Smile

Tung Sol were originally from NJ "Tungsten" + "Sol/Light"

Now Sovtek are using the brand name to make new tubes in Russia as part of the Electro-Harmonix group.

The 'gold pin' ones were my fave. Didn't sound dark, had a nice tone, and were very clean sounding. http://www.tungsol.com/tungsol/html/12ax7-gold-tung-sol.html I used to run them in an ART MPA for a few years.
