For our first booth we used dawbox plans and improvised. We went that route b/c we knew we would be moving it a couple of times. It had better sound proofing than whisper rooms I've used but it didn't always block out the sound of legos hitting the floor in the playroom upstairs. It did block out other noises around the barn and was great.
This time around we are building a room in the barn, since we had to start from scratch. I don't have enough photos to post right now but it is taking the plenum from the dawbox and elements we learned as audio engineers. It will have better sound proofing and lots of angles. It's trial and error since we've been at this for 20 years and know what is going to work for us and our studio space. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Interesting, I currently use a booth that I designed (because I rent) however, we are in the process of buying in a quiet established neighborhood, so no construction noises. I will have a designated room for recording and editing. I was prepared to just move and use my current set up in the new place, but if i can get a quality sound in the "room" that would be awesome, and comfortable. _________________ Create your own Great Life

I purchased the DAWbox plans a couple yeasr ago. 4'x6'
The details of the plan are pretty much horrible if you arent pretty handy.
BUT the actual design is pretty solid.
I'm substantially more than pretty handy so I decided to customize the plans and give it some upgrades. I modified the door size and also modified the plans for 3/4" mdf instead of 1/2".
I am very pleased with the result. It is in the basement and it blocks out 95% of the outside world. I have a train that is less than half a mile from me and it used to ruin my recordings all the time. It's a very busy train path. I no longer know when one passes.
With respect to kids. Umm, they are LOUD!! So somebody else mentioned that if your kids are over head you can hear the stomping and running sounds and that is true. But there are not many booths that would stop that sound. I think if i'd spent 6-7 times the money ($8400 minimum with almost no acoustic treatment) on a double walled Whisperroom that I'd still have those kid based interruptions. When your kid jumps off of a bed onto the floor above you...you're going to hear it. Physics.
My modified Dawbox was less than $1300 all in and thats including an entire booth of floor to ceiling denim acoustic panels and nicer lighting than the plans called for. I'm happy. Very happy. |
