In looking over the SAG-AFTRA rate sheet, I see 8 and 13 week sessions with designated usage amounts. Also the same time frames with Unlimited Usage, but I don’t see anything for Perpetuity. Is there such a thing with SAG-AFTRA?

The only Union jobs I’ve done have been through agents and they figure all that stuff out. And as long as my work has played, I’ve received residuals. I was just contacted privately about a "union" job in which the client mentioned perpetuity, a word which I try to avoid. Can someone who’s better versed than I with union rates provide me some insight?

I'm not well versed on SAG/Aftra but I'm pretty sure perpetuity only applies in certain cases such as narrations and not commercials or network TV programming. I've never seen a time limit on those. Also I voiced some video game characters for an online game and I got paid a pretty hefty fee for what amounted to "perpetuity".

Extremely limited. Work often closes the door to future work due to over exposure and conflicts, which is we get reuse fees and residuals.

If they want to pay in perpetuity, I say let them. Heck, I encourage it.

Read the above 8 times and memorise. KNOW where the value exists. MOST people who do voice over work have a machine which prints money and would sell it for $250 in a heart beat. DON'T!

I'm well aware of the reasons, ramifications and potential remorse, and appreciate the advice, but my question was, does SAG-AFTRA have a 'Perpetuity Rate'? If so, where might I find it?

We know you know. It's kinda generally accepted that comments are for the VO-BB internationally based audience who enjoy being edified by our ignorance. Pacifically mine Smile

Answer - No SAG-AFTRA doesn't as most contract lawyers would rail against the use of such an expression "in perpetuity". An artist is not able to agree to anything "post mortem" which would be essential in the context of the term. Substitute "unlimited" which is, forgive me for playing with semantics, the same but legally, significantly different.

I sign or agree to most terms and conditions because it's easier and usually because they are unenforceable.

Key - What could the organisation/employer (SAG-AFTRA contracts they are always the employer) "reasonably" do with the work of a voice over? We need to ensure that we are protected from unreasonable exploitation.

No. In perpetuity is a byproduct of the internet and non union. Those words do not exist in a union contract.

Now, not all contracts pay residuals. Promos do not. But if you have been a contracted network promo announcer you kinda look the other way on this because they payday is too good. The average promo with tags will pay just over $800, and a network promo announcer often does dozens in a day.

And even a contract that doesn't pay residuals, if buyers lift your work for another project, or bring it back for, whatever, they have to then pay you.
