Just tested Randy Morrison's Connection Open 2.0. No java, the download is tiny and takes no time at all. Super easy set up and it sounds fantastic. No latency. Multiple users. Mac and PC. It's in beta right now, so you can test. ConnectionOpen.com - if you have questions Randys email is randy@connectionopen.com
It's really good. _________________ www.melissaeXelberth.com

Hmm. And I'm looking for something to back up Skype.
Thanks.

Oh, this isn't a Skype replacement. This is an isdn replacement. With one difference from all the others. Uncompressed audio. _________________ www.melissaeXelberth.com

Well it's a non starter. Tried and tried with no luck. Might reach out to the guy you mentioned. My engineer friend suggested it was still an alpha, not a Beta.
It looks like it's going after musicians, so it might be striking at Google Hangouts.
Good luck. |

That's odd. You have to sign up and then sign in to download. The person you connect with also has to have it installed, on their end. Send Randy an email. He'll be happy to test with you. _________________ www.melissaeXelberth.com

I signed up and then did a test with Randy. It's clean and easy, with one exception on my end, and that's that I don't know how to bring the other person's Internet audio into my DAW. I could hear him very clearly. It just wasn't showing up on my mixing board. I'm sure it's easy and I'll figure it out somehow.
All he needs now is a lot more testing and then hundreds of users.

Randy started this a few years ago and it was primarily for bringing musicians together so you could do virtual orchestras online and mix a session with people all over just like VO sessions are done. I like it. |

Might be your system. The requirements weren't obvious when I downloaded it, and it crashed out on my older setup. Needs MacOS 10.11.x or higher, or Windows 10. _________________ JimEdgarVoices.com | JustAskJimVO.studio | Source-Connect: jimedgarvoices |

Just a follow-up to my post from last week.
Have connected with ConnectionOpen a few times between some local VO friends and was very impressed with the quality.
This morning, Randy was kind enough to spend some time on the line (via phone and then ConnectionOpen) answering questions and talking about the specifics of ConnectionOpen. I'd say if you are having any troubles with it, reach out to him.
My impressions - well, in this case it's a full-on Keanu Reeves "Whoa....." (hey, I live in California, we are all fluent in the Reevesian dialect here).
Very, very, very clean audio quality, not a hint of dropout or any audio issues. Really impressive.
As far as routing remote audio to your recording setup - currently you still need a hardware patch or connection (e.g. run it via an aux send to your DAW). But it sounds like AAX, AU and VST plug-in options are in the works, so it should behave like Source-Nexus in the near future.
2.0.6 right now. Free to sign up and download. Worth a look, methinks...

I did an hour long test with John Beach and it was rock solid and yes, none of that typical compression with ipDTL, SessionLink Pro, etc.
My only reservation is that it's hard enough to get clients to click on a link, never mind download software. Otherwise I would get this. Agree that it's a real ISDN replacement - but studios aren't going to download this.
On the other hand, so many of my clients use Go To Meeting all the time.
I was able to record it on my DAW split mono...ah, but that's because I have the spiffy Soundcraft Signature 10 mixer that lets you record the internet, so I could go right into REAPER. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Hey Philip
I don't think it's going to take over. It is another alternative. Like the creator said when he developed it. It's mainly for musicians to collaborate online. |
