Not exactly. I never denigrated "physicalizing" to get a good performance. I did say:
Quote: | I don't doubt some actors feel the need to be enormously physical to be enormously emotional in certain voice only scenes. I've met them and been a little leery of them. |
However Bob intoned:
Quote: | But for truth in performance you need to invest physically. Otherwise you are just reading with enthusiasm. |
And Karyn.... ... well let's just say that she said this:
Quote: | If you're performing from the neck up, you're just saying words. |
In my opinion that is disparagement of the lowest kind in what is supposed to be a collegial community. "You're not a good actor because you don't do it my way" grates just a bit, eh?

Thank you for your honest replies (and facetious ones).
I did not mean that one needs to go into calesthenics to use their body to support their voice. I mean that cutting off all emotion at the base of your neck and not allowing yourself to access your whole instrument (as athletically or not as you choose) is shortchanging the performance, and that performance is greatly enhanced when it is generated through your whole person (through large or small movements -- just connected ones). It just makes a better performance IMHO.
I hope that's clearer. _________________ * * * * * * * * * *

And I apologize, Bruce. I did not mean to be mean.
My sincerest apologies. Everyone has their techniques, and I am no expert in every one. I can only speak from my own experience. _________________ * * * * * * * * * *

I admit to a very poor choice of words -- I exaggerated too far to try to make a point. Mea culpa.
Please accept my apologies. _________________ * * * * * * * * * *

Well, I was referring to animation and games, not all of vo.
That said, in 35 plus years rarely have I seen a veteran vo actor not use their body and (or) hands when performing. From Ernie Anderson to Joe Cip. There are varying degrees based on the intent of the delivery. Much of it is subliminal. You don't even put any thought into it if it’s organic and in the moment.
A good friend of mine spent years as the voice of Lexus. She wasn’t gregarious at the mic, or overly physical. But we did some spots together and I noticed how her posture adjusted just a pinch when voicing these spots. I pointed it out to her. She was completely unaware. But she just stood a tad taller, her body expressing an air of class, as Lexus was more of a luxury brand. Sometimes it’s that subtle. |

Of course I don’t advocate a lifeless acting style. I’m as Italian as any Venetian in a coffee shop when it comes to my face and hands in character performance. I just don’t subscribe to the idea of one having to include overt physicality to be convincing in voice work.
One of our guiding thoughts (ugh, rules) here on the board is “no technology bashing” as in PCs are the only way to go and Macs suck, or Neumanns rule, and everything else is a kid’s toy. Maybe we should add no “technique” bashing. If whatever equipment or style you use gets you great results and happy clients, then it’s valid, for you at least.
Opinions are great and to be shared, even negative ones. Preferences are spiffy. Caveats are craved. We learn when the virtues or failures of some equipment, software, or performance tips are posted here. Pronouncing something someone else here does or uses as worthless... not so nice.
AKG mics are fair game however. *

Busy day today which started with something for Airbus.
I downed tools at around 3.30pm for a short break, went into the kitchen and made from scratch a Steak and Kidney pie, shortcrust pastry and to help with gravy added 2/3rds of a pint of a dark Scottish ale. I'm typing between munching.
Some will say "Oh gross!"
"Oh mega yum" will be exclaimed by others.
Who's wrong?
You either like it or y'don't!
It got into the Bess good food guide. |

Just read this on Twitter about UK Equity members.
"Only 2% of actors earn more than £20,000 a year". That's about $26,500! |

Actually, I'm quite surprised that it's as many as 2%
In the good news department... I still have one Fray Bentos snake'n'pygmy pie from my last UK trip. I shall feast. I have lots of Bisto as well... so that's another plus.. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

As with the SAG/AFTRA figures, it's based upon the above board income the members declare. There's probably no way to know the actual number. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
