"You are pests!"

Talk back selected and the Ad Agency creative working on behalf of Mr Birdseye and his peas replies.

"Mr Welles. Every time we are compelled to book you and I know I have to sit here, MY HEART SINKS! You know what theatre, cinema and radio is all about. WONDERFUL! YOU are being paid by our client, Mr Birdseye to sell frozen peas. If we wanted a critique of his and our approach we would've hired Sheridan Morley or Truman Capote. We do not and did not want that. The sound of your voice is so engaging and reassuring that it will prompt the downtrodden masses to rush out and buy peas. Indulge us in the depths of our collective ignorance and we will pay you enough to speed you on your way to another vat of Port to be consumed whilst making breakfast of a kid from college who had the temerity to deliver a newspaper to your home which contained a spelling mistake.

This was our proposal when we engaged your services and it remains so. The budget for this advertising campaign, the production of the commercials and the money being burned now is all riding on all of us out here getting what WE need in order to make a profit from selling peas. If you demand what YOU want, you may have it and our client will bill YOU?

Go for your cheque book, head for the door or do as we POLITELY ask of you. Roll the dice! It's your call FAT BWOY!"

Life would be very dull indeed without characters like Mr. Welles to establish some of the far boundaries of human behavior.

It all changed in 1938 when Orson Welles received a phone call from H.G Wells.

"Oi, mate! That radio play was sh*t!"

The bullied always become the bullies.

At my progressive fee paying school we didn't have bullies, we had "Character Building Consultants". Finding ones House Master to report being bullied was considered bad form. No one ever reported anything because (a) the House Master was usually the ring leader and (b) when ones school uniform was on fire finding a fire extinguisher was usually the priority.

The peas, beef burgers and frozen fish sessions were fun, yes.

But maybe you haven't heard the short session where a very obvious noise - which Orson obviously didn't hear - causes the engineer to ask for a retake:

Heard it and had I been the engineer I would've demonstrated to The Incredible Bulk why the Neumann U87 is known in our world as "The Suppository" Laugh

I would've responded similarly.

Interesting, that Welles, first, didn't hear the noise and, second, chose to take all that time fighting rather than simply doing the re-take. Funny, too, how those people who wonder why they have a reputation for ego and difficulty constantly demonstrate the reasons.

Quite a few years ago, I was doing the daily radio commercials for the major Hartford newspaper at certainly no more than $200 a pop. The largest suburban paper, in an effort to challenge the Hartford paper's dominance, engaged the services of Mr. Welles to be their spokesman, for a rumored $30,000. If anything had happened to me during that time, the Hartford paper would quickly have found a replacement. The Great Man, however, had a bit of a mishap in the midst of the competitor's campaign: he died. Obviously, this necessitated a change in their advertising. For the remainder of the run, they brought in a new announcer, not to re-do the commercials, but to add the intro, "Ladies and gentlemen, the late Orson Welles for the Journal Inquirer." They were going to get their thirty grand's worth.

It's slowly dying now, but back in 1985, it was still pretty healthy.
