In light of some recent critiques on this board's Critique section, one that may have caused an early collapse of someone's VO dreams, and another that may have caused one person to step back, search for more, and eventually try again, I thought this cartoon fairly appropriate.

Like learning to be a plumber, or a pro golfer, or an Internationally Famous Voiceoverist, you're going to be somewhere between so-so and crap the first few times you try it. It's what you tell yourself when you get those critiques, asked for or not, that will help you make it .... or not.

this is great! i think our critique section can be very helpful. there we can find honest, straight forward opinions about our work, our progress our marketing, etc. i tell people that the very first thing you have to develop in order to participate in the world of voice is a thick skin. as a rule we (most of us anyway) get told "no" a hullava lot more than we are told "yes". i think if our critique caused the implosion of someones dreams that, maybe those dreams weren't very strong to begin with. i believe it's been proven around here more than once that we are willing to help AND receive help, which most of the time is a lot harder.

I really wonder, when so many lash out at negative feedback -- constructive and well-intended as it may be -- whether these are some who've been told or led to believe that voice-over is "just talking;" "something we do every day."

They don't consider, when a professional in any field makes their work APPEAR easy, that it is only because of the time and effort they've put into learning and practicing, and accepting the feedback along the way, that creates that appearance.

Bruce, I love this. I strive for the attitude, though I wish I was as positive to my inner critique-er.

Dreams don't collapse here. They just sometimes get a bit of a reality check. There are no more generous people than the ones on the VO-BB.

Succeed or fail with the dream, I am fortunate to have some people here as my friends. Actual friends - not associates.
