VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I'm just trying to find out if I've fallen behind, from a tech standpoint. Unless asked to do otherwise, I tend to record all my files at 16/48 and then export most projects at 16/44.1. If the project is for video, however, all deliverable files are at 16/48 with a peak level of -6db.

Only rarely do I get a request for anything above 16/48, but I've never been asked for a different peak audio level.

Anyone do differently? And why?

Unless a client requires something different I always record and export in 16/44.1. It’s so easy to convert the audio on their end that they and I don’t worry about it. And keeping the volume to -6db and under is always good practice.

I’m sure we’ll all record at 32, or 64, or 96 someday, but until there’s a compelling reason to switch I don’t feel the need to drive the “hot” new model.

I record everything at 48 kHz/24 bit. Most jobs require aiff or WAV files at those same settings (completely uncompressed), though a good 30% or so are fine with high-quality mp3s (48/24 at 320 kbps). Less than 5% of jobs are good with "radio" settings of 44.1/16.

I do what Bruce does. If I know the client wants 48K, I'll record in 48K. Otherwise I just record and send in 44.1k. Recording in 48 and converting to 44.1 seems like a needless step.

48/24, always. Anytime I've ever asked a client that's their response, too.

Most of the clients I deal with, writers, producers, ad agency people, have no idea what those numbers are or what they mean. They just want nice, usable audio of the best performance I can give them. And I’ve never had an engineer or anyone else contact me to complain about or suggest different settings for my audio and I’ve been recording and sending out audio from my own studio for almost 20 years now.

When the people who pay the bills start to care, so will I.

I default to 48/24 purely as a matter of personal practice. I've never been asked about my specs. An occasional radio client prefers 44.1/16 but opts and is happy to convert himself.
