Billie Eilish recorded some of her hit music using an AT-2020 ($99) and a software program that costs $200, and she and her engineer brother did it in a minimally sound treated bedroom.
Here's an interesting article (quite technical at times) on how to create digital content on the cheap:
https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/27/billie-eilish-grammy-2020-bedroom-studio-logic-pro-x/
They used a $2,000 digital interface but could certainly have gotten good quality for less.

The good thing about cheap equipment is that it can sound great given the correct circumstances and usage. Billie Ellish, (and more notably in my opinion*) Todd, find the AT2020 serviceable and fit for purpose. On the other hand, the bad thing about cheap equipment is that it can also sound really bad when not matched with usage. I have the 2020 and I sound like crap on it... "spitty and sibilant". I bought it on a whim when it was $50 on Amazon. I over-spent. This is a true example of YMMV
*I have heard of, but never actually hear Billie Ellish... so she may actually sound far better than Todd... I've never heard Todd's singing voice... or her narration voice. So there's that. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I bought an AT 2035 for my first mic on recommendation from various VO. Ulf sounded great on it. I sounded awful. The Mike Joly mod we have (can't recall name) sounds good on us both. You just can't tell until you try. I donated my AT 2035 to someone starting out. |

They get away with a bedroom with minimal acoustic tuning because of her singing style, which is very low energy. As for the AT2020, I'm sure it wasn't used on her latest couple of hits as it's way too noisy, but in a lush production you wouldn't notice it. It's inspiring, though, and when I hear my 10 yo sing along with her matching her pitch for pitch, inflection for inflection, it really gets my gears turning... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
