It would be interesting to compare and contrast the voice over business in the UK with the US.
Before ISDN many UK talent would take long road trips from city to city to city actually going to studios to do their work. Am I close, Mr. Banks? |
Latter comment is bang on target Chris. Specifically for radio a select band of individuals used to do the grand tour of local commercial stations. It would go something like this. Get your map ready.......
Monday AM - GWR Bristol. PM - Severn Sound Gloucester.
Tuesday AM - Pirate FM Cornwall. PM - Plymouth Sound Plymouth
Wednesday AM - Devonair Exeter. PM Orchard FM Taunton Somerset
Thursday AM - Sound Station Hampshire. PM Fox FM Oxford
Friday AM - Swanse Sound Wales. PM Red Dragon FM Cardiff Wales
Needless to say the entire UK was covered and the good voices were sometimes booked months in advance. Equity the UK actors Union set the rate per script and the "voice of the day" would do anything from half a dozen to 20 or more. Although never really part of the Radio Voice Over circuit I sometimes did 3 or 4 sessions per week. I recall doing a session for Pirate FM in Cornwall consisting of 37 scripts at £13.65 per script, so that was a $900 session. On the downside if a voice was booked for a particular day and there were no commercials to be made he or she would get the call "don't bother turning up".
2007 almost every local commercial radio station with a commercial production department uses ISDN voices, seldom are the voice booked in advance and rarely do the sessions consist of more than one or two pieces of copy. The rate per commercial for the average station is $35 and the work routine is so-called "Fax n dial".
Producer phones. Are you available.
Set time for session often within minutes (hence fax n dial)
Faxes script
Dial ISDN codec
Voices who specialise in this market tend to work in 15 minute time frames.
By the way the new radio rates have just be set by Equity, the lowest is now around $30 the highest $1,100.
Never let it be said no one don't never tell you nothing! |

Philip,
If you don't mind and just to satisfy my personal curiosity, did the folks on that circuit mainly get from one city to another via auto? Or was train/bus/taxi a viable alternative? _________________ Be well,

For the majority of sessions get behind the wheel of the car was the best option. |

To add to the questions Banksey,
Do these folks work through an agent, or is it direct contact, on a "hope this talent is available basis", via contract, or whatever goes...?
It is about the same here, without an ISDN box... and was similar in the past as well.
As far as the sessions go...
Producer phones. Are you available?
Set time for session, often within minutes
emails/faxes script
Dial Phone Patch or "let 'er rip" (the talent records the script and sends the finished audio via .ftp or email).
With a box, the sessions are just as Phillip described.
Things are not so different on either side of the pond, are they?
Toodles,

In the case of the pile 'em high sell 'em cheap local radio ad's the work is producer to voice, seldom is there an agent involved.
The rates I quotes are for station produced ad's. If an Advertising Agency is involved (they tend to book via Voice over agents) there is a different rate which includes a $180 ISDN premium. For one average sized station the fee direct would be $35, for an ad agency around $220. |

I appreciate hearing both perspectives on the ISDN question, because I don't have it and have resolved not spend any more $$$$(except for a phone patch) until more $$$s start coming in from voiceover....good to hear that some of you folks are making a living without ISDN. |

I don't have an ISDN codec because all of my work is done from a recording studio with dozens of ISDN codecs (no kidding). So I can't really say I'm making a living without ISDN. If things change and I need to work entirely out of my home, ISDN and AudioTX would be purchased in a heartbeat.
Now if Frank would get off his duff and get that gadget of his working, maybe we could all kiss the thought of ISDN goodbye. |

Thanks...
Just had to get nasty with an employee/coder, legally. But things are changing... for the better I hope...
Soon, my friends, soon....
