This was the email I received in return:

At arms length as we are to this little saga...I would still have to say "no deal" UNLESS there is some hugely over-riding circumstance that you haven't shared so far that would cause you to reconsider.

Your explanations as to why you can't afford (finanacially and metally) to contunue to work with the gentlemen are quite valid... Nothing has changed other than this guy realized he is in a bind...

Nutherwords...he walks like a duck, looks like and duck and quacks like a duck. He will still be a duck when/if you speak with him again.

You have quite suffciently, and kindly, explained your reasons to discontinue the project. Nothing more than a polite "thanks but no thanks" is required from this point on.

You already gave them your reply. There is no need for you to do any more at this point. You have already spent a lot of your time on this project and time is money. YOU lost 4 days too! No need to make that 5.

That's a tough call.

OPTION A:

If you think you can deal with it, perhaps lay down a bit of an ultimatum. "Here are the only conditions in which I can continue working with you:
1. I will not correct copy...blah, blah, blah
2. blah, blah, blah
3. Payment must be...blah, blah, blah

...as soon as those conditions change, I will stop working on the project."

and whatever else will make it worth your while.

Whenever I hear that excuse of we have to finish this because, I often ask myself what they would do if I were to drop dead.

OPTION B (may be easier):

Hire a (mean) friend to answer the phone as your "agent" when he calls, and that person can play the bad guy.

Ya know - nowhere do I see in any of your posts that an actual monetary transaction has taken place. That's a good thing. Once money has changed hands, it becomes way more difficult to back out, but still can be done.

I can tell you how I'd handle it. You were crystal clear in telling him not to call you any more and that you were declining to continue with this project and why. Apparently, he truly does not understand English. Despite losing money that you never received and already earned, you were professional enough to advise him of your intentions. Whether he could be responsible for additional work or many referrals, if you acquiesce now it could come back to bite you in the backside.

Okay - now to answer your question: I wouldn't even acknowledge his plea to continue, nor would I answer his phone calls. However, keep in mind that's how I would handle it. YMMV

Turns out that he called twice while I was at dinner. But he didn't leave a message. So I sent the email below (with much thanks to my writing partner, D:

Dear Friend,

I am afraid this wonderful project needs a greater scope of work than I am capable of providing. When I said I would help you smooth out the script, I had no idea of how backwards this project was.

And I could never have predicted the amount of phone time you personally require. The way you want to work is very different than I have ever experienced in all my years of being a professional in this field. I must respectfully request that you accept my resignation from this project. I believe strongly that you will be too difficult to satisfy, and that completing this project under the current circumstances is just impossible.

BUT, if you get someone to finish the script for you, and you can get a completely finished script to me, I am happy to record it for you on Monday for $500 US paid via PayPal upon delivery of the audio files to you. It has to be a finished script. And you should tell me how many seconds you want each part of the script to be, like this:

Animation 1 Part 1:
50-:53 seconds

Animation 1 Part 2:
:45 - :48 seconds

And it must absolutely not require any more phone conversations at all. No more phone. Only email. It is way too much work for me to try to understand you, it is too stressful for me, and makes it hard for me to complete all my other work.

If this is acceptable to you, please let me know. Otherwise, it might be a good idea for you to find a bilingual talent to help you.

I will not be accepting phone calls of any kind about this subject.
