Got an email from my agent last night that a Casting Director was going to call me this morning with direction on a script.
Agent said that I would record AFTER the phone call.

I was a little surprised when, during the phone call, the casting director said, 'okay, why don't you give me 3 reads on script 1.'
Yikes!
I hadn't even really dived into the pronunciation of the 'big complicated word' that's in the script (a medical condition). So I was a little embarrassed when I hadn't had the word down on the phone with her.

Lesson learned on my part as I've never done a 'phone call with casting director' as part of the audition process. Lesson being: Prepare as if you're going into a session because it's better to be over-ready than scrambling during the call.

Agent apologized and life goes on but thought I'd share that experience as it's a new one for me!

It is so interesting to hear how other people prep. And, let's face it, if we aren't still learning on this job then what are we even doing?

I ask myself that question every day.

So far, I've learned that we're all human here, and all working on the same team -- we all want the job to turn out well... so don't sweat it too much.

I've had directed sessions where you don't even get the script till the morning of the session (more often, just an hour or perhaps some number of minutes before). Even worse, there are sessions where you don't even get the scripts until you're in the booth. I'm not sure how you prep for that one. (Answer: practice lots of cold reading.)

And for the coup de gras: had a session where we recorded 12 unique spots of different lengths, but a 13th got slipped in there last-minute. The spot was literally being finalized while we were in session recording the others.

In the end, we all play for the same team (the voice buyer) and so for you here it's as easy as asking for the pronunciation... and then being able to remember it later when it comes up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That's where I fail, and why I don't do medical narration, lol!
