Remember the children's rhyme: "fuzzy-wuzzy was a bear..."? Did you know that the term "fuzzy wuzzy" was a derogatory term for a black person? How about the origins of: "a dish fit for the gods", "a picture paints (is worth) a thousand words", "Batten down the hatches", "bet your bottom dollar" "bought the farm", the "devil and the deep blue sea" or "the last straw" Here's a site that seems to have the answers.
Oh, and according to them, "rule of thumb" has never been about spousal cruelty.
