Charter Oak Acoustics also makes a good tube mic, the SA538. Edo did a review of it's brother, the SA538B, on this board. Prompted by his comments, I called and spoke with Michael Deming, the owner and designer. He suggested a SA538 which would offer a bit more presence for voice over. So, I tried one out, bought it, and it's now my primary mic (switching over from a Gefell M930). It runs about $1300.

That's one of my all-time favorite Gary Larson cartoons. Cat fud finds its way onto my grocery list regularly.

Thanks, Jim

I like my Soundelux U195. The sound is clear, and I'm always having producers telling me they love the sound. I'm running it through an Earthworks Lab 101 preamp. It's a very clean preamp, adds no color to the sound at all.

I also really like the Studio Projects mic that Deirdre mentioned too. I use it for auditions and traveling.

Hey Melissa -- I'm a lower-toned female voice as well, and studio engineers always end up putting me in front of ATs or the U87. The AKGs just don't seem to mesh with my voice -- they seem to take the life out of it. (Sorry I can't be more technical in the description.) In my home studio, my day-to-day mic of choice is an AT.

Hope this helps...
