Where could one go to find all the other components of a Movie Trailer demo sans the voiceover? I know that we have a couple of them posted in places on this board like the old 13 going on 30 one, but is there somewhere where we can find newer ones to use for a demo or for practice even? I'd like to get some to try in Spanish as well.

If I were doing a movie trailer demo, I would spend some time and take real audio clips from the movie. In other words, pop in the DVD and record the sections you want. This would probably work best for movies you are really familiar with.
If you happen to have soundblaster Audigy soundcard, this is super easy as the control panel has a "record what U hear" option.

Many other sound cards have that same option, although not necessarily named the same. On my machine here at work, it's called "Wave Out Mix," and I use it when recording animation crits to record both the audio of the shot that I'm reviewing and my headset microphone. Quite a handy little feature if it's available.

Alan, you're right. RadioLinksHollywood is a great place for movie clip audio. You can use them and make your version of the trailer. I've used RLH before and still get the emails. Now, what I do is go to the Quicktime trailer site and take the audio track from the actual movie trailer (Quicktime Pro will let you separate the audio from the video), chop it up and add my VO, basically creating a new version of the trailer. I keep the trailer "shell" in case I want to play with it again later or try a different read. The trailer demo on my website was made this way. |

Allensco, do you need to be working on a Mac to do the stuff you described? By the way, the trailer demos on your site are great! You did those yourself? Cool stuff man.

JBarrett - I'm running an old PC with windows XP home edition. Do you think I have the capability to do what you described?

Nah...just have Quicktime Pro. I'm working on a PC with Win 2000 Pro and Sound Forge. |

It's more about the type of sound card you're using (although you could still have this feature even if your sound is built into the motherboard, like mine). Not all sound cards have the option of recording the outgoing audio mix, but many do.
To check yours, double-click the Volume (speaker icon) in your system tray (far right on the taskbar). When it comes up, select Options in the menu, then Properties. In the Properties panel, you'll see a section labeled "Adjust volume for", with some radio buttons. Select the one that's labeled "Recording", and in the section of the panel labeled "Show the following volume controls," you'll see a list of available recording sources (ignore the checks for now...they just mean that if you click OK, those items will have sliders on the volume control panel).
What you need to look for on that lower list is an item that indicates you're recording the outgoing audio mix. As mentioned earlier, different sound card makers use different names for this feature....things like "What U Hear," "Wave Out Mix," "Stereo Mix", etc. If you have something like that on the list, then you can choose it as your recording source and record pretty much anything you hear.

How do you remove the original VO?

That's the trick isn't it? Depends on the trailer. I try to grab the "teaser" trailer. A lot of them do not have a VO track at all, just on-screen text, which substitutes nicely for the script. Otherwise, it's a major hassle, which is why I don't play with very many of them.
Just a quick example, on the "13 Going On 30" trailer that we all had a crack at last year on "My Take...", the trailer shell was painstakingly edited by a gentleman not on this board (or at least I've never seen him here). He cut out the VO track and replaced it with the original music (80's pop tunes alot of us have in our collections anyway), and put his VO in place of the original. I guess what it comes down to is your editing skills and just how bad you want to do it.

Wow, very cool Travis and what a great idea. I've seen some of these VO-less trailers and had the idea to just read the text, but I hadn't done it. I'll have to look for more like that. Thanks for the tip!
