Annoyance here: I see posts (mostly on craigslist) that say "we can't pay you because we're a non-profit". What does your profit status have to do with whether you can pay me? My folks church is non-profit, yet they have to pay their bills. The United Way is "non-profit", but you can bet they pay top dollar for the voices in the TV ads.
Just getting tired of this excuse.... ok, done ranting. _________________ Jeff

I worked for a public radio station here (and some of you Utah dwellers will know which) whose GM makes 180k+. Ick. I dont work for that shop anymore since it became increasingly difficult to ask for money on-air during pledge drives and maintain some modicum of integrity. Whew! Shoulda seen some of the emails I received personally. As if it was my unilateral decision to pay the GM waaaay too much coin. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Them: We can't pay you because we're "non-profit"
Me: I can't do a VO for you because I'm "non-debt"
It's one thing where you're helping a good cause, it's another where people use it to try and keep from paying.
NB: as a previous poster stated, non-profit doesn't mean they can't pay... but if you're dealing with someone using that excuse, ask to see their ID. States issue non-profit groups and legal entities tax identification cards for identity purposes (and yes, you have the right... in some states, the legal obligation to ask). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Yeah but even if they are a legit 401C3, that doesn't mean they don't have money. Again, the United Way and Salvation Army are actual non-profit entities, but they shell out big bucks for CEOs, eployees, ad agencies...
I have no problem volunteering for good causes, but everyone else involved better be volunteering as well.... _________________ Jeff

yes sir you did. I was just pointing out that having the proper paperwork to prove they're non-profit is irrelevant. If someone says they're a non-profit, I'm probably going to believe them. But that doesn't mean my services are suddenly free. _________________ Jeff

Lots of charities pay for broadcast voice work and the union, and many non-union talent, give them a break and charge them for 13-weeks, but allow them to use the broadcast recording for a full year. Narrations are often done at half rate.
If it's a charity you admire and wish to support, I'd say feel free to donate your time. All others pay on the barrelhead. A discounted barrelhead, but a barrelhead nonetheless.
B
* I believe I may have set a new personal record for use of the word barrelhead in a single communication. Yep that did it. Just writing about it I've now used the word barrelhead four times.
No wait! That previous line makes it five times!

LOVE that word, and I did not know of it (save the obvious, top/bottom of said barrel)
bar·rel·head [bar-uhl-hed]
–noun 1. either of the round, flat sections that form the top and bottom of a barrel.
—Idiom2. on the barrelhead, in advance or on demand: They won't deliver the merchandise unless we pay cash on the barrelhead.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Origin: 1830–40; barrel + head]
On another note (read: threadjack), I have a word-a-day calendar and this one is swell, from yesterday:
man·sue·tude man-swi-tood, -tyood]
–noun mildness; gentleness: the mansuetude of Christian love.
n. Gentleness of manner; mildness
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Origin: 1350–1400; ME < L mānsuétūdō tameness, mildness, equiv. to mānsué-, base of mānsuéscere to become tame, mild (man(us) hand + suéscere to become accustomed) + -tūdō -tude] _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Don't know if I'd ever be able to use that word. I keep hearing Man-sweat in my head. _________________ Jeff

Deebs has said it here before, but...
Bottom line: with the exception noted by Bruce, don't work for free unless everyone else involved is also going unpaid. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.
